Recently I saw a report about some ‘research’ in which various large language model inference engines were put together in groups and let ‘talk to each other’ to see how they would ‘team up’ or something. Supposedly they developed ‘languages of their own’, which varied by model type. Gemini 3.5 […]

Gave my third OTZ lecture today to our Life Science students. We estimated the mass of the atmosphere, worked the stock (the mass) of CO2 present, and from there the mass of annual emissions and thought about it in relation to earth's population.

The scientific community has fallen so far it is now taking Stephen Wolfram’s self-published vanity book seriously. Just about the only book stupider than Wolfram’s is that one by Penrose that the Royal Society gave the Book Prize to. #science #mathematics

I have come to realize that CLOCKS DO SLOW DOWN NEAR MASSIVE BODIES. However, this has nothing to do with ‘time dilation’. ‘Modern physics’ stupidly imagines that a cesium atomic clock is some kind of idea timekeeper gifted by the Holy Name. A CESIUM ATOM IS MADE OF MOVING PARTS, YOU MORONS! […]

I don't understand folks that say that #AI can organise their notes for them. Don't they understand that the point of doing that is the process and not the result? The point is not that you've got your notes organised, is that you went through them, remembered them, thought about them and now […]

Managed to sneak my way in (late) to Michael Mann's "Science under Siege" talk at the Crick today. Very good and with constant reminders that there is everything to fight for - doom is a strategy by those who want you to give up, not a future.
Michael Mann in front of a slide with a picture of Sam Gamgee from the Lord of the Rings saying "There's some good in the world, Mr Frodo and it's worth fighting for. "

Just the smell of lynx can reduce deer browsing damage in recovering forests
New research shows that the mere smell of predators is enough to change deer behavior and limit browsing damage to tree saplings. The findings offer a potential tool for forest recovery and highlight the important role large predators play. The research is published in the British Ecological Society’s Journal of Applied Ecology.
