I have been slowly listening to @aptshadow.bsky.social 's "Children of Strife" over the course of the last month. It's spectacular. I consider it to be one of the two best works in the Children of Time series as a whole, and a real step up in the scope and mythos of that universe. ***** of *****

Just finished @fondalee.bsky.social ‘s latest, •The Last Contract of Isako.” What a ride. I can’t say too much about it without spoiling so many parts, but there are certain narrative choices that have this book bouncing between cyberpunk and sci-fi noir until it’s all blended smoothly together.

Tell me again why we need to build reactors that leave poison lying around for longer than human civilization has existed? Batteries and Solar+Wind cost less to build, do the job better, and don't leave our children and their children dying of radiation sickness. Nuclear just isn't worth it.

When I count up all the novels (files or links to full novels via netgalley) in the Hugo Voter Packet this year... It appears that @seananmcguire.bsky.social has breached the 25% mark of included books (19 of 69, since it contains all of the October Daye novels). This amuses me greatly.

Based on @seananmcguire.bsky.social’s glowing recommendation, I just finished reading “How to Survive Camping: The Man with no Shadow” Somehow a gore splattered yet wholesome camping season with cryptids who are downright terrifying, and a major body count… it works perfectly. #books #booksky
The cover of the book referenced I. The post, by author Bonnie Quinn.

The cover features a forest illuminated red by a campfire, where the fire casts a shadow of one camper sitting on a log, and another man stands while casting no shadow.

Glowing balls of light can be seen in the deep shadows of the forest.

I just DNF'd my first book of the year... well, audio-drama. It was extremely jingoistic, features military leaders barking orders and pounding the table a lot, and a constant scientific mistakes like "geosynchronous orbit over the south pole" which threw me right out of suspension of disbelief.

Chuck's basic point about AI apologism demands that we accept the idea that "AI is inevitable" is correct. It's fundamental economics. Stein's Law: "If something cannot go on forever, it will stop." AI investment cannot go on forever. AI growth cannot go on forever.

@annaleen.bsky.social My almost 12 year old child is resisting going to bed. Tonight’s form of resistence is grabbing books off the shelf in my bedroom and checking what they’re about. Child stopped and opened “Stories are Weapons” and read for 20 minutes… I think it’s a hit…

I have finally finished reading @charliejane.bsky.social ‘s most recent novel, “Lessons in Magic & Disaster,” and I have to say: I think this is her best book yet. It is grounded, completely personal, and wonderfully whimsical. Worth your time.
The cover of the book “Lessons in magic and Disaster” by Charlie Jane Anders.

There is a tagline that reads “witchcraft is hard. Families are harder.”

The background is purple, cracked concrete through which daisies have pushed through and taken root.

Today, I got to work and had the "joy" of a coworker asking me to check his figures on something. The query he used to get his raw data came from ChatGPT and he didn't know how it worked, so he needed someone who actually knows SQL to figure it out. So I had to rework the entire problem.

There’s a clip going around of a 10-year old, talking about his experiences and his injured friend, taken after the shooting this morning. The majority reaction on that post is to chastise MSNBC for interviewing a child. It’s true, a kid can’t give good consent for filming. It’s also true that..
