are we calling "an investment fund bought the building" "gentrification"? www.nbcnews.com/world/spain/...

"The case has brought new attention to an ongoing housing crisis in major cities across Spain, as gentrification has caused rents to skyrocket and the stock of affordable housing to shrink, leading to growing public anger.""An investment fund acquired Abascal's building in 2018 and sought a steep increase in her rent, and she had been fighting eviction for more than five years, according to the Madrid tenants union."

EXT. THANGORODRIM - DAY

We see a formidable mountain range, all rock, rearing into the sky,

ZOOM IN

MAEDHROS hangs from a precipice by his right wrist, bound in iron. We hear a RECORD SCRATCH.

FREEZE FRAME

Maedhros: Yup, that's me. You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation.

a screenshot of a youtube video that showed up in my recommended column with 913,000 views, uploaded 3 weeks ago, titled "Most People Are Cooking Beans Wrong! Try These Mexican..." by a channel called "Bertha Cooks." the thumbnail has a realistic but expressionless latina-looking lady in her late 50s or early 60s maybe? holding her index finger in front of her lips and a giant brown-glazed ceramic pot of very ai-generated-looking beans with what i swear are fucking pine needles in the center as "herbs." oh and there's a red box with "MEXICAN TRICK" in white and a red arrow pointing to the beans

if any fellow filmmakers were thinking of doing NYC screenings at murmrr, i recommend... not
a screenshot of an email that reads: "

Murmrr and Utopia present the NY premiere of About A Hero, directed by Piotr Winiewicz and based on the story written by an Artificial Intelligence Agent inspired by Werner Herzog.

7 PM - Doors

8 PM - Screening

9:30 PM - Q&A with director Piotr Winiewicz and KASPAR,

the artificial intelligence behind the About A Hero story.

Join us for a special screening of ABOUT A HERO, Piotr Winiewicz’s genre-bending film created from a story generated by KASPAR, an AI trained - with Werner Herzog’s permission - on Herzog’s body of work.

Following the screening, Winiewicz will participate in a one-of-a-kind Q&A alongside KASPAR, exploring the film’s central questions around authorship, originality, consent, creativity and the limits of machine-made meaning. The conversation will offer audiences a rare opportunity to hear directly from both the filmmaker and the AI system that helped generate the story behind the film"

my mom sent this to me, from a parking lot in red-ass central florida
a maroon, kinda beat-up ford F-250 pick-up truck with "FUDJT" written in big white letters on the back window. underneath that is "fuck you donald trump" in smaller but very clear letters! the truck tailgate also seems to have had a yellow "support the troops" ribbon peeled off at some point

there's also a weird white squiggle that i think was an accidental edit

a good case study in recognizing ai-generated images here. the lettering on the posters in the background (and mug)
a bsky post from a guy named neil mackay that says "... the fucking state of it ..." as a caption to a photo that appears to be taken from an interview with a man "Live: Belton, TX." the man is white with a goatee, wearing a MAGA hat, with donald trump in profile tattooed on the right side of his face, with their ears matching up. but there are two posters of text in the background of the cluttered living room... both seemingly with the same text. the text is garbled in the way that ai-generated text often is. ditto for a white mug in the background that i think is supposed to read "dad life" but is fucked up in a way that simply being out of focus wouldn't do

this is the thought process of someone who needs to go outside. yes, of course, people would die if your fucking software turned off various power grids. but the entire human species? no! no it would not!
question from wired: "So, people are kind of skeptical of this claim that AI will kill us all. I think the main question I get from people is, well, how will AI actually kill us all? And is that the right question to be asking?"

answer, from the anthropic guy who quit: I think it's a really natural question to ask, because, as I've said many times, this stuff sounds like science fiction. But the classic example is, like, synthesizing a new virus or taking down critical infrastructure by doing some sort of hacking spree—the latter might be less likely to kill literally everyone.

the end of the main story in the 7th book is the protagonist wondering if he can get his inherited slave—from a literal race of slaves who, one "weirdo" aside, LOVE being slaves—to make him a sandwich
three posts from a guy named peter sagal. the first one reads: "I've said it before, and I've said it again: the Harry Potter books are terrific, especially when read aloud. They appeal to any child who is told they are special, and great things are expected of them, and yet they have no idea how to live up to that.

I heard the author died. Not sure. Too bad."

the second one reads: "also, there are complete sets of the books available at most garage sales, every library sale and a lot of antique/junk shops. Failing that, I recommend your local public library."

the third post reads: "Further! One of the powerful messages of the books is inclusion. The villains are aristocratic racists who want to dominate "lesser" humans, and there are characters who are unfairly discriminated against because of their innate nature. I would recommend them are [sic] curatives to any form of bigotry."

what's so funny is that a decade ago viceland (vice's cable tv channel) was doing these numbers and it was CATASTROPHIC
a screenshot of a paragraph from today's garbage day newsletter: "Piker’s most popular stream, which was the night of El-Sayed’s primary, got an average of 42,000 viewers according to TwitchTracker, with a peak of 61,000 when news organizations called the race. These are impressive numbers, but it only made Piker the 63rd highest viewed streamer on Twitch last month. The very same day, Kai Cenat got a peak of 162,000 viewers on a relatively unspectacular stream. Cenat’s best figures for August came during the days-long Minecraft stream he did with IShowSpeed, where he peaked over 198,000 viewers." the last sentence is highlighted in green

"Rachel, a Culver City–based mother of a 17-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter, says both of her kids and their friends attend ticketed parties thrown by other teens, which are promoted on social media; her son’s friend has a “business” throwing parties at other people’s homes. Teenagers in the LA area “can stay out really late and, you know, just take a Waymo and be very independent,” she says. The fact that “everyone has their parents’ credit card on their phone” is a game changer, she adds. “Kids are just kind of absent-mindedly spending a lot of money.”"

the absurdity of thinking these for-marketing-purposes-only film stills are of any actual value, let alone $300
a person holds up two "strips" of film that are actually just 3 single frames from The Odyssey, one of the frames being a promotional version of the title on the far right of each strip, and the frame on the far left of each strip being half-obscured by a circular sticker that says "IMAX AMC". the middle frame of each strip is the burning of the temple at troy (top) and odysseus' ship on the sea (bottom). these strips are listed for $140 (formerly $300 lol) and are located in hoboken, NJ

i cannot imagine a single production company that would want to option a script that has, however poorly, already been made www.theverge.com/entertainmen...
a screenshot of a paragraph from the linked Verge article that reads:

"Cully Hill Boys tells the story of three struggling rappers from East London whose lives are turned upside down when they accidentally steal a crime lord’s money. The project is codirected by Adilet Abish and Aitore Zholdaskali — who also helmed Higgsfield’s Hell Grind feature — and is based on a script that was initially written by Tim Planagan before it landed on the Black List screenplay submission service for unproduced projects. After acquiring the script’s AI production rights, Higgsfield tapped streamer Mikyle “N3on” Rafiq, basketball content creator Matt Kiatipis, and UFC fighter Israel Adesanya to “star” as its leads. Though none of Cully Hill Boys’ actors shot any scenes on set, each of them signed licensing agreements with Higgsfield for their likenesses to be used in the project. And while Planagan gave Higgsfield the ability to adapt this story using generative AI, he still retains the rights necessary for it to be produced traditionally." the last sentence has been highlighted

sometimes i just re-read the script for the chernobyl finale
LEGASOV: "I've already trod on dangerous ground. We're on dangerous ground right now. Because of our secrets and our lies. They are practically what defines us. When the truth offends, we lie and lie until we cannot even remember it's there. But it IS still THERE. Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. (beat) Sooner or later, the debt is paid."

Legasov turns back to the six scientists. His colleagues. His peers. His secret jury. His hope.

LEGASOV: "That is how an RBMK reactor core explodes. (beat) Lies."LEGASOV (VO ON TAPE): "To be a scientist is to be naive. We are so focused on our search for truth, we fail to consider how few actually want us to find it. But it is always there, whether we can see if or not, whether we choose to or not. The truth doesn't care about our needs or wants. It doesn't care about our governments, our ideologies, our religions. It will lie in wait, for all time."

We RISE UP HIGHER - as the car disappears down the road.

LEGASOV (VO ON TAPE): "And this, at last, is the gift of Chernobyl. Where I once would fear the cost of truth, now I only ask: What is the cost of lies?"

an absolutely unhinged response to someone saying that speed and red light cameras (which only take a photo of vehicles that are speeding or running a red light) that reduce crashes and fatalities is good, actually:

Because I'm not sure why I would feel bad about speeding while cops routinely get away with child rape, or why I'd want to give child porn loving cops access to cams to save some speeders"

"When Hell Gate purchased a $3.50 Coke Zero from the robot arm, we noted that the vending machines may be a hair slower than your average subway retailer accustomed to handing over goods in a hurry. (Alternately: In our recollection, there also existed some lackadaisical retail guys who simply could not give a shit if you were trying to make this N train Uptown, they were going to take their sweet time grabbing your copy of XXL Magazine from behind the counter.) We witnessed this problem in action Thursday evening, after one woman in a pink sweatsuit asked us breathlessly whether the vending machine takes credit cards—but just as she was about to make her selection, her train rolled into the station. "Oh shit! Excuse my language!" she exclaimed, before racing down the steps and yelling, "Hold the train! Hold the train!""
