The thing that bugged me about every podcast app is that a show is a stream of episodes, latest first, which doesn't work for a story. So Bard's home screen asks what you were in the middle of and puts that first.

This week I fixed the BBC audio dramas. They had a blank square where the cover should be, and their episodes wouldn't play. Both work now. Chapters show up on a lot more shows too.

As a proper highfalutin english major, I rarely agree with the AP Style book, but I just saw something where they added a rule to avoid anthropomorphizing AI and to focus on talking about it like a system - good one, AP.

There are a lot of new whizbangs and quality-of-life refinements in Bard this week, largely around discovery of new audio drama and actual plays. playbard.fm As I write this I'm releasing version 0.7.0. iOS is just slow as molasses, so expect the web app to be several versions ahead.

The first rejection was because the reviewer wasn't sure a podcast player had the copyright to play podcasts, and ... - I'm certain I've encountered some real trash on the app store.

Candy Claus Private Eye is an interesting test of Bard's indexer. On Apple it's not fiction, but comedy, so it fails one of Bard's screeners; but the Podcast Index _does_ recognize it as such. Today's Barding has a number of tweaks, namely addressing some issues with search. When you search, there are two fallbacks if your #actualplay or #audiodrama aren't in the library, and the last of them hilariously failed when you searched for more than one word. Woops.

A bit of detail about Imagination Library, since I looked into it a while back: As you might expect, the cost of providing free monthly books to every <5yo kid in a community is very high. The program contributes a lot of that cost, plus logistics, but they ask for a local partner to contribute

Bard is its own curated index of podcast fiction, but it’s really tricky to classify “fiction” correctly with the way podcast feeds work. So, Bard includes manual curation tools and background scanners that look for shows like this - that are “fiction,” but are also not what Bard’s made for.

One lesson from building my own podcast index is that APs and ADs are pretty inconsistent self-descriptors. Bard tries to classify and categorize them based on show descriptions but often can’t, because other than D&D shows don’t actually say what they’re about.

Bard (playbard.fm) is just pending app store review and ought to be in the wild in the next day or so. Bard is a podcast player for literally just actual plays and audio drama. I already think hands-down it's the best place to discover new shows. -- and ai podcast fiction is suppressed.

I have a headscratcher of a gripe with The Odyssey. With as much focus on xenia, the violation of divine law, on the unending nature of reciprocal violence, they omitted Athena herself having to put an end to Odysseus's revenge. The theme being that only the divine can stop reciprocal violence.

I just watched The Death of Robin Hood. I just read some reviews from folks who thought it was boring, but - for me - 10/10 no notes. I had to sit in silence for about fifteen minutes to let it digest.
