„Trying is only emphasising the thing we know already." — F.M. Alexander Most of your problems are due to fixation on known knowns making you unavailable to the unknown unknowns. When you start to get that feeling like maybe you‘re in over your head, the first thing you must do is _stop trying_.

Correct. A friend drew my attention to this way back in 2016: the very reason why people were inclined to dismiss him as a serious contender — his clownishness — was exactly what made him most dangerous, because it is simply impossible to sustain an atmosphere of moral seriousness around him.

While I am tipping sacred cows: at least as late as the Vajracchedika and even the Lankavatara, the term “dharmakaya” just means “embodied in the dharma” when it appears as an adjective (often) and “the corpus of dharmas” when it appears as a noun (seldom).

My reaction to the word “mahayana” is almost exactly like Johnny Depp’s Mr Wonka’s response every time he tries to say the word “parents”: idiopathic acute dyspepsia.

Buddhism has many well-known practices which function as antidotes to anger, resentment and ill-will, but what about fear?

It is precisely the letting go that is the gateway to absorption and the cause of the happiness. The more letting go, the more happiness. Weird but true. Try it and see.

Patience and forbearance is the result of shifting forgiveness forward in time. If you know in advance that you’re going to get over it eventually anyway, then by reverse induction you should save yourself the entire hassle and just do it now.

Tathagatagarbha doesn‘t mean buddha-nature, it means literally „womb of the tathagata“: it means you and every other sapiens are the incubator and potential birthplace of a being beyond birth. The fact that almost all of them happen to miscarry doesn‘t harm the principle.

The word _bikkhu_ does not mean monk, it means *beggar*. In the context of the buddhist agamas it means someone who casts aside all social status (including its accoutrements like posessions and money) in order to remove any illusion that his life doesn‘t depend on others.

岭上白云朝未散, 田中青麦旱将枯。 自生自灭成何事, 能逐东风作雨无? White clouds linger above the ridge this morning; the green wheat in the fields is nearly withered from drought. What is accomplished by arising and ceasing of oneself? Can you join with the east wind and become rain?

Cessation of apperception and valuation in buddhist meditation is not an exotic state: it is an enlargement of, or abiding in, something that is spontaneously happening all the time but is unstable and inaccessible to introspection.

This is exactly the problem with every system. 90% of all civilization is maintenance -- maintenance of systems, maintenance of things, maintenance of people -- and that's boring.

Resistance to this insight comes from the fact that we want to believe that our attachments are natural, our suffering meaningful, and our activities effective. If happiness is just absorption this mostly isn‘t true: our attachments are arbitrary, our suffering senseless, our activities futile.

The thing about being ruled by a gerontocracy is that cohort mortality is a probability density, meaning all these fuckers start dying around the same time -- in clusters. The same Weibull Distribution "bathtub curve" explains why batches of light bulbs and hard drives all die in the same month.
A line graph plotting the probability density function of a Weibull distribution over time. The horizontal axis represents elapsed time, and the vertical axis represents the probability of failure. The curve models a wear-out scenario where the shape parameter is greater than one.At the beginning of the timeline, the line starts near zero, indicating a very low risk of early failure. It remains low and relatively flat across the initial and middle stages of life. As time advances toward the right, the line curves sharply upward (called the "bathtub curve" because it resembles the back of a bathtub. It forms a steep, narrow peak that represents a concentrated cluster of failures near the end of the maximum lifespan. After reaching this maximum peak, the curve plunges rapidly back down to zero, indicating that nearly all subjects in the population have failed.

„Filter bubbles are bad.“ My friend: go into any great gothic church or tibetan temple. Look around you, soak it in: what do you see? It is a physical structure of symbols crafted such that literally everything you see functions to remind you of what you are supposed to believe.

We only cast about for reasons why something is so when it isn‘t self-evident that it is so. When it is self-evident that something is so, the question of why or how it can be so never comes up. If you want to be convinced, don‘t ask for the reasons: look for the self-evidence.

Impermanence. Conditionality. Selflessness. Emptiness. Naturelessness. These are words that get thrown around in buddhist discourse as if they were the key to how it all really is, but this is merely exchanging one view for another. These are not attributes of reality, they are corrective prompts.

It is good to understand that truth ascriptions are always blind, in the sense that their scope of validity is never fully determinate and hence we are always rolling the dice a bit when we affirm anything at all.

Emotions are changes trying to happen in you. If you struggle to suppress them you just prolong the birth pangs; if you amplify them through ruminating you distort their function. Just vanish into them and before you know it you will find them also vanishing — and yourself seeing with fresh eyes.

Lots of things are like this but the more common case is a circular-head-hammering action where A hits B hits C hits A, and being the first to stop feels like unilateral surrender — or worse, failure to fulfil an obligation.

Of course, science is lousy with examples where exact expressions governing systems are known- quantum mechanics, multi-body problems, turbulent flow, chemical reactions, protein folding, etc.- but knowledge of the underlying behavior still gives very limited understanding of the system.

The meaning of memento mori is often inadequately understood: it‘s not so much that you will die some unpredictable future day, but rather that living is itself dying and distraction is the state of being oblivious to what you are dying for right now.

Sometimes I wake up in the morning and a thought occurs to me that seems reasonable, or at least mildly appealing or interesting. Then I move a little bit forward in my day — brush teeth, shower, dress, begin making coffee — and the same thought now seems laughable, unappealing, uninteresting.
