I landed back in Sydney 90 minutes ago, and already: - bought a coffee for over $7 - carried my luggage down the stairs because the lift and escalator were out - overheard people talking real estate It's good to be home. 😅🙃🥰

The third and fourth times, there were others and it took about three seconds for my uptight self to go from "Gah!" to "Oh this is fine, actually". This feels like a good development. I think I can find time for one more visit before I fly home.

Michelle @schadenfrieda.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Although the first two times, I was in there on my own. It's almost a philosophical question: if a person goes to the onsen and nobody else is there, were they really in the nuddy?

110

Michelle @schadenfrieda.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

The thing about onsen is that they're really lovely. On this trip, I've gone from "Oh my God, I'm really nuding up in front of strangers!" to "What do you MEAN this hotel has no public bath?!" in the space of ten days. 🥲

Book 20 (woohoo!): I Am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki. I have continued with the German memoir but paused it again to read this Japanese classic while in Japan. Once again photographing a book in situ as inspired by @bethanykeats.bsky.social.

My hand holding the book in front of a Japanese dark-framed paper sliding door. The cover is soft red with an illustrated cat decorated in blue and white as through made of ceramic. It is holding an ink brush in its mouth and looking cheekily over its shoulder. There are blue ink smudges and pawprints. The title is there twice, in both Japanese and English.

I dunno, Japan - consider *not* calling it a transfer when it involves an 800m walk underground including along other platforms. Maybe "Nearby stations" is what you're looking for...? 🤦‍♀️

27. Amrum (2025) dir. Fatih Akın Just days ago I was thinking of how I'd lost track of old mate's career - and then this was on offer during my flight last night! Beautiful, subdued and brutal by turns, this gave me an insight into a part of Germany I knew nothing about (that dialect!). A master.

A boy in Hitler Youth beige and black uniform walks a bicycle across a vast beach. The horizon is low with a hazy blue sky. The title is in white all-caps against the blue.

I finished this earlier today before flying out on an international holiday. It was a quick easy read and I would have enjoyed more fleshed out characters, but it was quite good at weaving together themes of classism, racism, sexism and homophobia. How fortunate I am only to travel for leisure!

Michelle @schadenfrieda.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

Also limited? I sort of understand why licensing/IP etc. would make all this the case - I'd just wrongly always assumed the digital stuff would be an infinite resource.

Did you know ebooks can all be currently on loan? I did not know this. Now that I know this, I have some questions...

Book 19: Now You See Us by Balli Kaur Jaswal. I don't think I've ever done this before - I've paused my German book (slow progress) to read this one, due back to the library for a book club meeting I'll miss due to travel. I can resume the German one (my own copy) while on holiday.

The book cover is bright red with the title in white and yellow all-caps. At the top is an illustration of the lower half of a maid: rubber gloves, bucket, mop, brown legs and sneakers. Their apron or dress has a floral pattern that blends in with the wallpaper behind.

I've just skipped two packed trains from Central because I'm far too tired to face standing for thirty minutes. Now walking on aching feet to another platform. Third time's a charm...?

26. Viceroy's House (2017) dir. Gurinder Chadha I watched this on an acquaintance's recommendation. Sure enough, it's a very watchable account of the events around Partition, but it mostly just left me feeling I have even more reading to do than I thought. Good performances at its centre.

Film poster with the Mountbattens and other characters standing in front of the opulent facade. There's a golden sort of glow to it all and a red carpet. The title is in white.

25. In a Land That No Longer Exists (2022) dir. Aelrun Goette A lightweight but stylish addition to the body of films set (with varying nostalgia) in the GDR. A coming-of-age story set in the fashion world doesn't grab me, but the artsier aspects are wonderfully Berlin. As always, the Stasi lurk.

The poster has a bold red background with the faint outlines of a black and white streetscape photo; the German title is in large all-caps, the first three words in white and remainder in black. The lead character Suzi is wearing black pants and a cropped red top. She is flanked by two male characters wearing black.

24. Barbarella (1968) dir. Roger Vadim This was actually a lot of fun. Of course it's silly and incoherent but much funnier than I expected... and the costumes and sets are enjoyably ridiculous. More spaceships should be lined with fake fur. Jane Fonda is just great.

The film poster dominated by an illustration. Jane Fonda as Barbarella, posing in skimpy clothing and holding a futuristic weapon. Scenes from the film are behind her. The title is in bright red with the added tag line "Queen of the Galaxy".

23. Cats (2019) dir. Tom Hooper WOOF!

I dunno. The poster has some "cats" but they're sexy-leotard humanoid cats striking dance poses in front of a pink and blue artificial night skyline. The title is in infantile font in yellow.

22. The Way (2010) dir. Emilio Estevez This was just lovely. A beautifully shot journey across an ancient pilgrimage route by a grieving father and three companions met along the way (who grow believably from bloody annoying to likeable). Made me think about why I walk, and yearn to do the Camino.

The four main characters stride across the poster from right to left, one after the other. Behind them on a white background is a large yellow road sign saying the film's title with an arrow.

21. Sky Pirates (1986) dir. Colin Eggleston Loving homage? Bland rip-off? Why not a little of both? This Australian Indy is not very good and yet quite a bit more likeable than it deserves to be. Have no fear - Bill Hunter is in it.

The poster: John Hargreaves in 1940s pilot gear as Harris, with shots from the film behind him. In front of him is the title in bold red and yellow shadowed letters.

National Threatened Species Day has been observed in Australia for 30 years. It marks the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger in 1936, driven to extinction by a government bounty. Yet in 2026 governments are still failing, and we are facing yet more totally avoidable extinctions and habitat loss.
