How should long-term employment contracts be regulated? We show that optimal regulation prices the use of non-competes, tying stronger non-competes to higher wages. This limits inefficient worker lock-in and raises pay at better matches. buff.ly/PD964cP

Some admit their careers were a lottery, then treat the jackpot as a mandate. Their egos have tenure, while their agendas are still in kindergarten. Lads, a passing crowd’s applause is *not* the esteem of minds worth impressing. Luck, it seems, arrives faster than self-awareness.

Excellent essay/ food for thought by @wtgowers.bsky.social. Socialist Hotels is the first photography book to focus solely on the architecture of hospitality in Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet landscape. These state-constructed buildings were used by visiting government workers and ordinary citizens. Today they are a fascinating legacy of a social and cultural idiosyncrasy.

Forthcoming in the AER: "Quota Adjustment Process" by Taro Kumano and Morimitsu Kurino.
aeaweb.org
Quota Adjustment Process
(Forthcoming Article) - In designing priority-based matching problems such as school choice, the quota of each school is, to some extent, a design variable. We define an ex-post student-optimal stable matching (ESOSM) as a matching that is stable at some implementable quota distribution and not Pareto dominated by any other stable matching among all implementable quota distributions. We propose a novel mechanism called a quota adjustment process (QAP) that improves existing stable mechanisms by endogenously finding an ESOSM and the corresponding optimal quota distribution for any preference relation. This method has been successfully implemented at the University of Tsukuba in Japan since 2021.
