I think critical language is already developing in popular use so I'm fairly ambivalent about new taxonomies coming from academia - but I do think it's funny that one of the critics in the replies says 'using language like this won't help you reach the normies'. Yes, indeed.

My views of the Doomer side of AI resistance have always been... cynical, to say the least, and I'm aware that this is just one person who said something stupid in a way that the media could clickbait. Still, their taking hold of the wider narrative would not be a good thing.

Another aspect of this that I've noticed with young adults is a rapidly growing fortifying of social identities. The threat of deepfakes especially is creating an 'us' and 'them' dynamic around generative AI. Rightfully so really - social disdain is just about the only defence left to young people

Looks like the digital panopticon’s still on the menu, boys
'Harness power of AI to get ahead of criminals
In an interview with Sir Tony Blair last month, she said:
"AI and technology can be transformative to the whole of the law and order space.
"When I was in justice, my ultimate vision for that part of the criminal justice system was to achieve, by means of AI and technology, what Jeremy Bentham tried to do with his Panopticon. That is that the eyes of the state can be on you at all times.
"Similarly, in the world of policing, in particular, we've already been rolling out live facial recognition technology, but I think there's big space here for being able to harness the power of AI and tech to get ahead of the criminals, frankly, which is what we're trying to do."
Bentham, an 18th-century philosopher and social theorist, promoted the Panopticon as a circular prison with a central inspection tower from which a single guard could observe all inmates all the time while unseen.
A government source said: "This doesn't mean watching people who are non-criminals - but she feels like, if you commit a crime, you sacrifice the right to the kind of liberty the rest of us enjoy."

From The Times - if you weren't cynical enough about Burnham then let stuff like this - his tie-less revolution - drive you over the edge...
He does not plan, for example, to wear a shirt and tie when he becomes prime minister on Monday — except in the chamber or for exceptional events. More broadly, the whipping system, feared for its heavy hand in former guises, is due for a radical overhaul and softer touch. And Burnham himself is to be a gentler political figure, one who spoke of finding “common ground” with other parties in his speech. “By seeking more consensus, we may just find the change we make is more lasting,” he said. “We may find our political discourse in this country becomes that little bit less toxic.”
