Text: “Places to Stand in Florida” Excerpt
Fried Zucchini
by Christopher Crenshaw
You park next to a tiny purple Geo convertible a quarter mile down the road, in a lot shaded from the May sun by spreading live oaks.

The sun peeks and blushes like an early summer debutante over the shoulders of intimidating gray clouds—making vague threats of rain, maybe later—but you’re already sweating from the humidity as you make your way out of the lot and past the scores of cars lining the narrow road that leads down to the festivities.

A photo of an alligator colored orange underneath a Saw Palm “Places to Stand in Florida” Excerpt. The text reads: “‘Places to Stand in Florida’ Excerpt ‘Mini Alligators in the I-75’ by Fatima Sajjad. We were driving to Atlanta in the early hours of the morning. The highway, like most structures in the United States, seemed to have limited functionality, erected instead to serve as a temple for the gods of capitalism. Every couple of feet or so, you’d come across a vast billboard. Most of them were the usual kind – lawyers and businessmen peddling their wares. It was a modest, hand-painted billboard that caught our eye: Florida Citrus Center. In smaller font: we have mini alligators! Read more at www.sawpalm.org/placestostand.html.”

Take a trip back to Saw Palm's 17th issue with us, featuring Sarah Pouliot's "Bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon." Issues 3-20 are available for purchase at www.sawpalm.org/past-issues.html #submissions #florida #literature #art #nonfiction #poetry #comics

The poem "Bioluminescence in the Indian River Lagoon" by Sarah Pouliot from Saw Palm's 17th issue is superimposed on top of an underwater photo of a lagoon.
The poem reads, "the edge of my coral kayak
dips in the dim haze of waves
at dusk; many mosquito bites
linger on my arms
as i paddle farther into the murky lagoon

sunrays dissolve; light is restored
by the moon’s lambent glow
when effulgent gleams
emerge, igniting tides with neon blue

cerulean flickers dance
in ripples, algae blooms
erupting with luster
in the swirling sweeps of my paddle—

a sunken nebula
of fireflies, scintillating
like gold-flecked stones;
i reach to hold luminous planets confined."

A photo of the Anhinga Trail colored blue. Overlaying text reads: “‘Places to Stand in Florida’ Excerpt ‘First Sunset, Anhinga Trail’ by Diana Woodcock. Dragonflies—Four-spotted and Halloween Pennants, Eastern Pondhawks and Blue Dashers—were my escorts, feasting on the mosquitoes that would have feasted on me. Alligators lay quietly dozing, all but two who were swimming from pond apples to willow thicket. One Red-winged blackbird landed right on the railing to which I was heading, one foot away, as if to say, This is my spot for sunset, and I couldn’t blame him—it was the best seat in the house as the sun lowered itself behind sawgrass.
