Part of what keeps America so violent is the insistence that people perform care, empty goodness and absolution for white men who espouse hatred and violence.

“There is no place for political violence in this country” say the politicians using legislation and rhetoric to attack trans people, immigrants, women and BIPOC daily. Just because it’s done with a pen and not a gun doesn’t mean it’s not political violence. Hypocrites. Not that they care.

Wow so Earthlings. Read it in one sitting. I have to say I liked it leagues better than Convenience Store Woman, but I could see the thematic throughline between them easily.

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

Per the webinar today: the answer is there is no point in applying. They are rolling over for these extralegal anti-“D/E/I” measures and, what’s more, forcing any recipient to sign a contract promising not to engage in any D/E/I activities for decades.

Real talk: Is it worth applying to the NEA now? These processes are always so opaque but I wonder who’s in charge of reading apps and granting these awards now because if actual NEA people I bet my work is fine. If ultra conservative shitbags, then what’s the point of expending the energy to apply?

we are depriving generations of kids of the formative experience of stumbling upon some weird horny sci-fi or fantasy book that was absolutely not written for them, which is the kind of thing that makes reading feel exhilarating, like you are unlocking the grownup world’s fun secrets

I’ll never forget working in the library and having one kid spontaneously monologue to me about how great Wimpy Kid was. At the end he declared that all the kids who said they didn’t like books hadn’t read THIS book! That enthusiasm comes from getting to connect with stories on your own terms.
