Disney has now shelved three episodes featuring storylines centered on transgender characters and gender identity. The episodes, from ‘Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,’ ‘The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,’ and ‘Win or Lose,’ were either cut from release or have since leaked online.

It seems that queer characters are vanishing in groups. Shows with prominent representation often have more than one queer character (some shows, like Our Flag and Heartstopper, have 4 or more). When an inclusive show is canceled, we lose a LOT of representation at once. #SaveQueerStories

Way back in the pause before this announcement, I said that if Doctor Who and Heartstopper (two cultural juggernauts) were to be canceled, it would be a very grim sign of things to come. Both of these shows have now been reshuffled and defunded. This is de facto censorship. #SaveQueerStories

We’ve been researching these attacks on queer-inclusive TV shows for about the last year or so. The data is really something. Queer-inclusive shows were 2x more likely to be canceled or “ended” in 2024, despite performing as well as other shows. Queer representation is life-saving. This is grim.

Even hit shows see a huge drop in views in the months after their debuts. That the likes of DBDA, S&B, and KAOS, which received little promotion and were quickly shelved, are still performing at >1/4 the popularity of these shows speaks to the evergreen appeal of queer-inclusive stories.

For comparison, the following shows released in 2024: Smash hit Baby Reindeer got 4.2m in the first half of 2025. Bodkin got 2.1m. 3 Body Problem, 5.2m. Supacell, 4.5m. The Diplomat S2 got 4.3m. Sweet Tooth, whose 3rd season aired in 2024, saw 4.5m across all 3 seasons, averaging 1.5m per season.
