Perth, Western Australia I don't label myself or my outlook on life here, especially as my views and priorities may change over time. However, a longstanding tenet of mine is "Do as you would be done by", which works for me. Take me as you find me.

The Coalition has just announced its new immigration policy and it’s going to make us more divided, meaner and poorer as a nation. It’s bottom of the barrel politics cutting our refugee intake by 50% and forcing people seeking asylum to be at risk of starvation.

There are some excellent comments and questions in this article. Whatever the truth may finally turn out to be, this is a story full of inconsistencies and improbabilities. Why are the mainstream media avoiding rather than investigating it? #Auspol

Costs the Earth. My cartoon in today's @theageaustralia.bsky.social and @sydmorningherald.bsky.social
A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing three vignette drawings with captions below each one. First is a drawing of ceramic piggy bank labelled "Cost of attending COP talks." Second is a large sack full of money labelled "Cost of doing what COP recommends". Third is the Earth labelled, "The cost of doing neither."

I can't change the past & I mourn for the suffering of Jews and all others. Can you set aside ancient tribal grievances, & lust for retribution, or whatever it is, and look at what is being done to Palestinian people, in Gaza and the West Bank at the moment? These are humans like you. This is now.

Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
There's a narrative that only Jewish people are truly aware of, & mourn, the horrors of the Holocaust. Following that, no-one else can either question or criticise what the state of Israel, as the self-appointed spokespeople for all Jewish people, does - because that's antisemitic. Both False

Unlike Israel, all those countries enable people of diverse ethnicities and religions full citizenship and thus voting rights. What does "self-determination" mean to you? Am I right in inferring that it means control by Jewish people only? That would be what we call "ethnosupremacy", AKA apartheid.

Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
If that means what I think it means, I'm certainly not doing that - nor do others with whom I discuss this. However, if we realise that we've aided, or participated in, actions that we now understand to be unacceptable that were led by a friend, it's necessary to draw a line & say so, & stop.

Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I am fully aware of that history, which was hideous. Repeating history does not repair it. Do you acknowledge that Palestinian people are now being expelled (or driven) from their homeland, and that, due to Islamophobic propaganda, they are being rejected as refugees from those very countries?
110
Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm not Jewish, & I don't understand the alleged essentiality of exclusive "self-determination" of (some) Jewish people, as if any other group of people actually has what is apparently promised under that slogan. All other people in the world need to live, & negotiate with, everyone else.

Humans have created eons of historical cruelty to each other, including many incidences of injustice & some cases of intended genocide - some successful. Not one of those incidences of cruelty was right or fair, and not one of them justifies doing the same, or similar, to any other group of people.

Initially I was surprised by a couple of things that I had become used to in driving the BMW that were missing in the i30, eg electric seat adjustment. However, the hugely more efficient fuel consumption and (thus far in 8 years!!) complete lack of any mechanical issues, outweigh trivial stuff.

Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I have no info on either of those, Larry, but I can say that I bought a near-new Hyundai i30 8 years ago (replacing a BMW, originally bought new) and it's been brilliant, objectively & also by comparison - at about 1/3 the (new) price - including on very long trips. I recommend checking that out.

Apparently "the situation with Israel and Palestine" is "complicated". Maybe. It's certainly horrific, immoral & shameful, & decency dictates that any of those trumps "complicated". Until other nations stop excusing/supporting/arming this cruel, expansionist barbarity, it will NEVER stop. #Auspol

Many of us consider that any group of people committing mass murder (or genocide) are, ipso facto, "the baddies". We tend to be more vocal about that when our own governments commit, arm, fund, support, deny, refuse to sanction, and/or suppress protest about it, & thus make us complicit. #Auspol

☺️I'm sure that in the past I've unknowingly reposted AI slop, & it's awful to now initially suspect every lovely animal video as being that. There are many wonderful authentic animal images and videos, and the slop detracts from them. It does us all a disservice, & wastefully consumes resources.

This thread reminded me that for many Australians who left home in the 70's, the stove commonly encountered in rented houses was the Early Kooka. They came with decades of baked-on grease, a malfunctioning griller and a tiny, tiny oven. Of course there were no range hoods. Ah - happy times.
The Early Kooka, a green-coloured, enamel, free-standing gas oven and stove. The cream-coloured oven door had an illustration of a kookaburra (Australian kingfisher) and the words "Early Kooka". There were four gas burners on the stove. You had to light the stove burners and the oven burner (on the bottom, at the back) with a lit match after turning on the gas. There was room underneath the oven to store oven trays on the floor if you wanted to, and a shelf above the stove to keep food warm.

None of this is new to anyone who's been paying attention to what's been going on in Gaza & the West Bank. The intent has been obvious for years, & is now promoted openly by people who consider that they are immune from any accountability. Ethnic cleansing is a disgusting euphemism for genocide.

A huge upside of "compulsory voting" in Australia is that interfering with someone's ability to vote is a serious crime. Voting isn't compulsory, but having your name checked off is. We can write whatever we want on the slip. Electronic voting is inconsistent with that & privacy, so we don't use it.

You're almost certainly right. I try to live by my tenet of doing unto others etc so, in good faith, I sometimes engage respectfully for a while, just in case there's a thread of doubt to be pulled, so to speak, & it prompts thinking. Assumes that there's room for change in all of us. Maybe foolish.

An important point is that these events weren't compulsory, so those who might have been upset by hearing about the effects of war on children, including from an expert on that who has (gasp!) previously spoken up for the human rights of Palestinians, need not have attended. This was censorship.

Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
My concern is the people, especially children, suffering this now. Contrary to your earlier comment, they neither chose nor started this - that was before their parents were born. Do you consider Palestinians to be people, like you, & can you imagine what is being done to them being done to you?
110
Sato Juniper @satojuniper.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The people in Gaza have been under harsh blockade for 20 years, a result of ongoing conflict about the partition of Palestine in 1947. It may comfort you to think that Israel tries to minimise civilian harm. Given that Israel refuses a 2-state solution, what do you think the ultimate plan is?
