Perth, Western Australia I don't label myself or my outlook on life here, especially as my views and priorities may change over time. However, a longstanding tenet of mine is "Do as you would be done by", which works for me. Take me as you find me.

There's a difference between a bingo card of politicians' talking points & an actual "to do" list. This is the latter, currently enacted in real time. It's being pursued by very powerful people in Australia who have no original ideas but REALLY like what they see occurring in the USA today. #Auspol

This thread reminded me that for many Australians who left home in the 70's, the stove commonly encountered in rented houses was the Early Kooka. They came with decades of baked-on grease, a malfunctioning griller and a tiny, tiny oven. Of course there were no range hoods. Ah - happy times.
The Early Kooka, a green-coloured, enamel, free-standing gas oven and stove. The cream-coloured oven door had an illustration of a kookaburra (Australian kingfisher) and the words "Early Kooka". There were four gas burners on the stove. You had to light the stove burners and the oven burner (on the bottom, at the back) with a lit match after turning on the gas. There was room underneath the oven to store oven trays on the floor if you wanted to, and a shelf above the stove to keep food warm.

This would be hilarious were it not so tragic in its apparently total lack of insight, whether by deceit or a genuine lack of ability to reflect honestly on the behaviour of oneself or one's own country. Throughout its entire history the USA has spent only 16 years NOT at war with someone. #Auspol
Commentary from Caitlin Johnstone: "literally the funniest country that could possibly utter this criticism of another country's military spending". The commentary relates to an image of Marco Rubio, with a quote from him: "imagine if instead of spending billions of dollars supporting terrorists or weapons, Iran had spent that money helping the people of Iran. They would have a much different country.

"Iran must de-escalate" reminded me of this gem (creator unknown). Nobody 'wins' a war - everyone loses - so it's best to not start them. We all know who started this one, and it wasn't Iran, though we've heard for 35+ years that they were "just about to". Now - about Israel invading Lebanon #Auspol

In 1982 she won an Advance Australia Award.
O'Donoghue was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1983 New Year Honours for service to the Aboriginal community, and was named Australian of the Year in 1984, for her work to improve the welfare of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Rosa Parks May her bravery be remembered for ever.
Image of Rosa Parks
Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an American civil rights activist whose refusal to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955 ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Already active in the NAACP, Parks’ arrest became a key test case against segregation. The 381-day boycott, led by Martin Luther King Jr., ended with a Supreme Court ruling desegregating buses. She continued her activism in Detroit and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal.

Here's my suggestion for a new flag.
Design for new Australian flag. Lower third red, referencing the Indigenous flag, upper two thirds blue with white Southern Cross . The general design echoes that of the Indigenous flag while remaining distinct, and the colours, red, white and blue reference the existing Australian flag.

Exactly. It's important now to argue strongly for equivalence. Either anti-hate and anti-discrimination measures should apply for all or they should apply for none. Privileging one group is racist by definition. I find this table a useful illustration of that. Needs more columns for other targets.

It's inescapable how differential standards of concern apply to different ethnicities in Australia. Ongoing injury to Indigenous people, exacerbated by the result of the Voice referendum, is ignored, ditto surging Islamophobia, but 'antisemitism' is full focus. Let's go for equivalence at least.

If we are to be stuck with the flawed IHRA definition of antisemitism we must exert pressure to ensure that its equivalence applies to ALL targets of racism, not just one. This is an example that I've been sharing today- a similar example would work for racism against Indigenous Australians. #Auspol

If the IHRA definition is to be adopted for antisemitism we have to lobby hard for equivalence for Islamophobia and other racism, eg against Indigenous people. If it's good for one group it should be good for all. What would be the grounds to refuse that? I found this example very useful. #Auspol

Sure - but "Whataboutism" works 2 ways. "But Hamas!" is getting very stale as an excuse for Israel's conduct in Gaza and the West Bank & that of its cheer squad of unregistered lobbyists in Australia. Imagine Islamophobia and antisemitism being defined in the same way and treated the same. #Auspol
