Anthropic frantically and mindlessly speed-building massive new polluting fossil fuel infrastructure but then also buying carbon removal offsets to "help address emissions" is such as perfect demonstration of why silicon valley has failed so spectacularly to actually help tackle climate change.

Bringing new power to the grid: We’re working to add new power generation to serve our data centers, so we aren’t drawing down the supply that homes and businesses rely on. Much of that new power is natural gas, which can be brought online quickly, ramps up and down as demand changes, and is abundant in the places we’re considering for data centers. We’re also working to broaden our energy mix with geothermal, wind, solar, and emerging technologies, and in regions with strong renewable resources, we’re designing projects that will rely on renewable energy. To help address emissions, we’ve joined Frontier, a group that supports companies working on carbon removal, to help grow the market for carbon removal and storage.

Unfortunately there are people who care about trans people having rights who are not trans people themselves and I’m sure that the number will suddenly grow exponentially post election when candidates have lost and you’re looking for someone to blame that isn’t the candidates themselves

Unfortunately abandoning trans people is not the deal-breaker many on the left think it is as there have been no tangible consequences for Dem polticians who do it.
For one thing, there aren't many trans people in the U.S. population (only 1%) so there's not a lot of backlash.

Premissene med kriminaliseringen av sexsalg (inkl. sexkjøpsloven eller "den nordiske modellen") har alltid vært rasistiske, og rotfestet i "policing" av kvinnekropper. Konsekvensene av kriminalisert sexsalg er at *alle* kvinner er mistenkeliggjort av staten, særlig hvis de er rasialiserte.

The second problem with "usefulness" as a primary concern is that it pushes all of the harms (to self, to others, to society, to the planet) outside the frame. In other words, given all of the harms, even if the software weren't janky, there would still be plenty of reasons to oppose it. >>

How AI quietly rewrote Big Tech's climate promises

In 2020, Microsoft promised to be carbon negative by 2030 and Google called 24/7 carbon-free energy “our biggest sustainability moonshot yet”. Six years and one AI boom later, the companies’ own data puts all four of the biggest cloud and AI providers roughly 60 to 80% above where they stood around the time they made those promises. The pledges were quietly reworked to fit. Goals became moonshots, baselines became year-over-year, “100% renewable” came to mean a yearly total rather than the power actually running the servers, and carbon-neutral claims were discontinued. Here is the scorecard, how the goalposts moved, and what to ask your AI vendors.

“AI will help solve it”
Alongside the rising numbers runs a second narrative. Google and BCG wrote in 2023 that AI “has the potential to help mitigate 5-10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030”, a projection from a consultancy report, not a measurement.20 Microsoft called AI “an essential tool to accelerate progress toward sustainability”.21 Google’s 2026 report announcement estimates that nine of its products helped others reduce about 41 million tonnes, “roughly three times Google’s own emissions”.6

Maybe. But enabled or avoided emissions are counterfactual estimates with no agreed standard, and they cannot be subtracted from an emissions inventory. However large the estimate:

A tonne someone else might not have emitted is not a tonne you did not emit.
