The TexArcana ebook is on sale today! I have two stories in this Texas-themed fantasy anthology! (Or maybe actually three...🤫) One story is about a young influencer who sees ghosts, the other is about a self-destructing D&D party, and the other is about... wait, shh, there is no other!

Posting this again to remind you you dont have to be an amazing artist to draw comics!

I have learned that trying to balance work/life is super challenging when working on GN's, but worth the effort. Not just for me, but for my family. I've also learned to take a step back from social media when it's messing with my head & creativity. :) #kidlitchat

A few holiday postcard illustrations I sent out to friends and family from years prior ❄️🎄 (....fairly certain the 3rd one's imagery was my subtle dig against all the stupid book-burning and banning that started up in 2022)

illustration of a pair of hands holding a mug, with lots of pink steam, another hand dropping spices into it from above, all haloed with holly leaves and berries

illustration of an ear-muffed woman holding up a paper-cut string of snowmen and snowflakes

illustration of a person laying in a field of poinsettia, a book open over them with glowing rays of lights

My kids' elementary school used to have a book-themed costume parade, where all the kids marched around dressed up as book characters. So fun. Mostly kids wore their normal costumes and found a book to match (like a spiderman book, etc.) but some people did get really creative. #kidlitchat

From the storytelling class I taught at the DFW Writers' Conference last weekend...

Think of your story like an egg: the shell is the plot, and the gooey insides are the emotional core.

If you only have plot, your story will be hollow and have no substance.

If you only focus on the emotional core, you'll have a delicious mess with no structure.

I try to keep in mind that there will always be a gap between the ideal art I'd like to create and what I actually create, and to make peace with that. It's probably also a good thing: that feeling motivates me to keep learning & improving.

Sarah Mensinga @sarahmensinga.bsky.social · 24/09/2025

So true. One of my main motivations for for teaching classes at my local writers convention is because it forces me out of my comfort zone & it also gets easier and less stressful every time I do it.

if i have any advice to aspiring comic artists, it's that unless you actively really enjoy the process of drawing detailed backgrounds, you will save yourself a lot of time and energy developing a style that does not require you to always include them

I dreamed I visited a Severance-themed restaurant with my parents and sisters. They ate together, but I ate in an isolated room. When I tried to find them, I couldn't. I'm the only member of my family who lives in the US, while the rest live in Canada, so my subconscious is getting very dramatic.
