This is the only advice you need before diving in to the pure joy that is Taskmaster (which is on Hulu now).

Intellectually, I know this is not even in the Top 100 things worth getting mad about in 2026… AND YET.

I hope I have the AI Skeptic tag On Here. In fact it needs to go further: I am an AI hater because the people making and selling it have no regard for people, labor, or the humanity in creativity and therefore the product is dangerous.

OK I shouldn’t be hopeful that the Buffy reunion and recognition at the Emmys means there’s a chance Peacock will pick up the sequel series, right?

This was predictable on their part and I didn’t need an AI to figure it out.

This is one of those “lost to time” SNL sketches that I started to wonder if my sister and I both dreamed. We used to quote this entire Tom Hanks episode all the time. #Brocktoon

I loved it! The nostalgia elements made me very happy, but it was also just a funny, clever movie on its own. So glad everyone fought to get this released!

I weirdly thought of the Muppets too & one of my favorite Tim Curry bits is him referring to Miss Piggy as the one who got away in an interview that was years after the movie & not otherwise about the Muppets at all!

Dolly Parton and Tim Curry leaving us in the same week feels personal. Lights are going out when so much around us is dark, and it is normal to want to grieve them as if you lost a loved one. Go easy on yourselves today, friends.

What I think a lot of people who advocate for AI writing don’t fully understand is that they’re ultimately advocating for the end of writers. Even if some people want to read slop, no one will pay you to prompt an AI to generate, say, a romance novel once they can do the exact same thing for free.

I rarely do query critiques anymore, so here’s my general query tip: Comps don’t need to be exact. Stay in the same genre/market & try to have at least one published in the last 5-10 years (or newer if MG/YA). But it’s OK for them to be more vibe-based if there’s no direct or obvious match.

Sarah LaPolla @sarahlapolla.com · 17/08/2026
Observation in author pitches lately: the word “upmarket” regardless of the genre/premise, and a heightened anxiety over finding “perfect” comp titles. Is there new advice floating around forcing authors to make querying harder on themselves for no reason?

No one in particular in mind right now—trust me, when I'm up again, you'll know—but just a reminder that a great way to show love for an author is to preorder their book or buy it the very first week it's on sale. (Hounding your local library to stock it is also aces.)

I think it’s one of those “rules” that started with agents defining what “recent comp” meant & then it became ingrained in writers that all comps all the time needed to be 5 years old or newer regardless of what they write.

not to get political, but America is real pretty and has a lot of nice folks making cool things, and i think if we had a president who wasn’t actively trying to murder us, we could have a pretty good time

Missed it in theaters, so I’m belatedly recommending the delightful ride of a movie “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die” if you haven’t seen it already! It’s streaming on Hulu and involves Sam Rockwell fully committing, per usual. Go watch it.

Sometimes my work day consists of spending 30-60 minutes searching for new hidden AI features that Google turned on against my will & combing through settings to turn them all off just so I can open a file in Docs without it being stolen for future plagiarism & slop.

Hey writers, editors, & anyone who uses Google workspace because there’s no other viable alternative - in addition to turning off Smart features, make sure you toggle off this new mess of nonsense hidden in the Admin settings.

Every time a writer says they use AI for some part of the creative process I am so unspeakably depressed, as writers we should be aggressively, insanely organic in our pushback, we should be making ink from our tears, we should be opening our veins and writing with our own blood

Have any other NYCers noticed a trend of people in their 30s and 40s walking around wearing cowboy boots with otherwise “business casual” attire? Is this a thing? I can’t be the only one seeing this.
