1/x Two of the best-known coats on any high street began as working kit for sailors on cold decks. Both carry names from my little corner of the North Sea: Duffel, a small town near Antwerp, and the Dutch word "pij". The story of the duffel coat and the peacoat. #maritimehistory

And yet gas-only cars constituted 77% of the new vehicle market in the US over that period. Has the US ever been this far behind the world average in new tech adoption for a major product type?

Very sad to hear that Henk Spruit, a legend in all things magnetohydrodynamical, has passed away. Although he spent much of his career at MPA in Garching, he held a Professorship by Special Appointment at our institute for quite some time. A great scientist, lovely human and not a fan of shoes.

I hate supporting any animal farming knowing these practices, it becomes so hard to scrutinise every label and also not spend crazy $ on food every months (and yes, my diet is heavily plant-based)

yes I'd be interested in seeing the statistics on AI usage (though I don't know how many people will follow the disclosure guidance that was in the CfP); AND how it correlates with success rate. could certainly play a role in allowing people to produce text more efficiently.

I do wonder what is driving this huge over subscription… is it the unique capabilities of JWST, a lack of other new facilities with enormous leaps in capability, or that JWST programs have the now rare benefit of coming with funding?

+1, multiple factors. and while writing a proposal is hard work, if you have proposals written from previous cycles, it is not hard to resubmit those with minor changes from the previous cycle. just from my own experience, resubmissions must be a big factor in the increasing numbers.

Work must be right - and that means extreme care needs to be taken to make sure we are not wrong. If we are right, then we should be interesting! Otherwise what's the point? If we're doing something right and interesting, then there is space to be creative. Is the method novel? Is it fun?

aside from the moral aspect of using the platform, the engagement dropped hugely for me on x after Musk's takeover. it was the random porn showing up in my feed and replies that made it unusable. I would tweet during the day, and I can't have that showing up on any of my screens in my office.

I remember one where I had entered the room, said hello, walked to the front, got my laptop out, and was standing at the front waiting for someone to come talk to me. They started discussing where the speaker was - I literally had to interrupt and tell them HI, YOUR SPEAKER, IT'S ME.
