I’m so thrilled to share the news that my new novel PENITENT will be published by @doubledaybooks.bsky.social, with Thomas Gebremedhin editing! Thanks as always to my agent Kirby Kim for his wise advice and for finding my book its best possible home. Coming Spring 2028! I can't wait.
Author of APPLESEED and contributor to Best American Mystery Stories and Best American Fantasy Matt Bell's PENITENT, a future-set novel cast in a medieval-like world in which a dutiful subject is called to war by his queen and, after killing seven men, must undertake a grueling journey of atonement-one year of pilgrimage for each life taken-only to find his path complicated by encounters with uncertain allies, hidden enemies, and the queen herself, whose plans grow ever more at odds with his own, forcing a reckoning with faith and violence as he struggles to return to the wife and unborn child he left behind, to Thomas Gebremedhin at Doubleday, by Kirby Kim at Janklow & Nesbit (NA).

I often write in first person, but when writing something emotionally difficult, or when I'm in a tough emotional place myself, I find the third person offers a kind of magic, the ability to imagine without having to fully inhabit. To be transported w/o me overly becoming the emotional conduit.

A screenshot from the UMN Job search page for a visiting writer of creative nonfiction. You have to be in Minneapolis or the surrounding area for 2-3 years, you teach a 1-1 (1 grad class capped at 15 one semester, 1 undergrad class that tends to be capped at 22), and you need to have a book under contract. You have to have an advanced degree MA, MFA, PhD to apply for this position; it's a requirement the university won't budge on because the position involves teaching and mentorship on the graduate level

Who else is writing this Thanksgiving? I refuse to travel for Thanksgiving (family is far), so husband and I have a great tradition of holing up, ordering some kind of takeout, and creating things for several days. It could sound lonely, I suppose, but it's really lovely.

Graphic of Bathrobe Gal turning toward the light and ignoring an angry person who stands yelling in the shadows. B Gal's arms are full of flowers. Text: "Only you know what it feels like to be experiencing the world as you, inside YOUR self. So don't let other people try to tell you who THEY think you are or should be."
Graphic of Bathrobe Gal sitting amid giant flowers and hugging a cute dog, wearing her noise-blocking headphones and looking safe. Text: "You deserve love and care and a world where you are safe. So let's create one together."

Much to say, but for now, here’s something I made a while ago that felt hopeful and still does––despite. Let’s never stop fighting for a better world. #autism
All my life, people told me I was too sensitive and wrong in an attempt to change me. I tried so hard to follow their rules and fix myself to live up to their ideas of good and strong. It didn't work...
When I was finally able to embrace my sensitivities, differences, and needs instead, I ended up becoming a whole lot stronger. Some people still might not think so. But...
I think maybe they've just never seen strength like mine.

Autistic humans deserve to be valued, supported, and deemed worthy for being who we are, as we are, at all levels of need. Despite what RFK wants you to believe, human value is not based on “functionality;” children are not merely a “resource” to feed the economic machine. #autism #neurodivergence

Reminder that writing memoir is not cathartic. More like having an illness & the only recovery is pushing thru to other side. Or being haunted knowing you have a story you must tell. Or being the mush-goo of a whatever a caterpillar is in a chrysalis, hoping to Nature you get a butterfly.

👀
My novel does all of the things on this list* so...

• "Characters confronting buried truths"
• "Stories that bend time, reality, and identity"
• "Novels that reclaim, remix, or reimagine forgotten narratives"
• Feminist horror
• High-concept with heart

*Except for the romance-specific bullet (but the romance between the main characters is pretty sweet AND "genre-blending").

I have a new story in @havehashad.com today! my third one 💀 🏚️ ✨ grateful as always to editor @aaronburch.bsky.social for providing a wonderful home for my words + to all of you who read it ♡ www.havehashad.com/hadposts/the...
At the top of the page is a drawing of a pile of skulls. Underneath is today’s date: March 31, 2025. Then the title of the story and the name of the author: The Haunted House of Things Left Unsaid by Anna Vangala Jones.
Below that is the text of the opening lines of the story: “Everyone’s heard the rumors that when you die, they take you into a house you’ve never seen before—real dilapidated and creepy for added effect maybe—and in each room, they make you watch people from throughout the course of your life reading or listening to all the things you’ve wanted to say to them when you were alive but never did. Letters, emails, notes in books, burned CDs, text messages, silent moments”

I have a secret: it's my escape route. Do you also have an escape plan or safety in place? #autism #neurodivergent
"I often need a safe space. But that can be hard to find. In life, I've found the most readily available space that's almost everywhere is...the bathroom."
“I hate bathroom smells and germs; they're claustrophobic, but convenient. No one asks why I’m running off or why I took a long time. When I say “I’m going to the bathroom” it’s code. Only I know what the code means.”
“In private, I can safely have the meltdown I’ve been holding back, give myself care, or regulate. It’s scary to have feelings and behaviors that can be intense, uncontrollable, and deeply socially unacceptable. This is stuff that’s harder to talk about.”
“PSA: Keep your bathrooms clean and accessible to all. You never know who might need them.”

Our world is frequently devastating and unconscionable, and also, have you even SEEN a tree? Trees are glorious, hope-giving, kinder creatures. I have not yet managed to become one but at least in my time I can honor them.
