Thanks for helping coordinate this effort, Pleasantine!

I signed this and encourage others in the cell biology community to sign as well. The contest is supposed to be about the intricacy and beauty of living systems. This is what I love most about biology! For Nikon to choose a winner that doesn't faithfully reflect biology is disheartening and sad.

If it’s AI, which is seeming likely, there is something profoundly cynical and sad about using synthetic images to cheat in a contest that is supposed to be about how beautiful and cool biology is. 😔

Back home from a fantastic Cilia and Centrosomes meeting! Thanks to @cilialab.bsky.social, @reitergroup.bsky.social and @nachury.bsky.social, things went super smoothly! Looking forward to continuing to work with Max and welcoming Jessica Feldman and Nick Berbari onboard as 2028 co-organizers!

Yes. This is what I’ve been telling people for weeks now. The impact on scientific research would be catastrophic, but that is likely not even the worst consequence of implementing this OMB rule change.

I am so sorry the are back on their bullshit with these pay disparities! We just need collective bargaining for public employees, including grad workers.

Sarah Goetz @sarahgoetz.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
The reason we knew about it is that this was a disparity within a *single* department (!) We all had to TA at least 1 semester even if we were grant supported. So sometimes you were co-TAing with a more experienced student, yet were getting paid much more than them. Extremely unfair.

I'm faculty at Duke now. I don't think our higher pay for grad workers is from a sense of Duke's largesse, nor that it justifies higher tuition (which is absurdly high). I attribute it to our Grad Union. Though I'm pretty sure state law would make it hard for UNC grad workers to unionize.

Sarah Goetz @sarahgoetz.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
This was true even when you pro-rated (we were paid 12 months, they had 9 month TAships). It took YEARS of us agitating to get to parity. And this now seems like an even worse disparity (I'm also willing to bet that the UNC grad students in biomedical programs are getting closer Duke's pay than 20K)

Yiiiikes, that's really awful. I didn't realize UNC was (still) so bad on this. I was a grad student in Biology at UNC 20 years ago. At the time we had a really big problem where the molecular and cellular biology grad students were paid significantly more than the ecology/evolution students.

Yeah, means testing is garbage and only ends up making things difficult for lower income and working class folks. Money spent on rich ppl who don’t “need” it is trivial.

I highly recommend her book “Why Trust Science?” It moves past the usual (sometimes quite flippant) answers scientists often give to this question.

Yeah, we’re currently in a state-wide drought. Wildfires are fairly common here, but they don’t tend to get big like out west. At least not as of now-who knows with climate change.

They don’t actually want to give money to people. At least, the leadership doesn’t.

There are employment law firms that have specific expertise in academic employment, tenure issues, etc. even if not admitted to the bar in your friend’s state, that is often a surmountable issue, so they should look broadly.

We are signatories to that but I guess that tells you how much that is worth when it comes down to it 🤷🏼‍♀️. Last year was more chaotic for sure, but also things are not fine and peachy now either.

Also last year my institution rescinded offers from people who hadn’t accepted by a certain point. They didn’t announce they were doing it beforehand, even to faculty. And I don’t think we were the only ones. So definitely don’t wait til the last minute.

In the 8 years that NYC was my home, I don’t think I ever paid attention to a mayor being sworn in. But I’m truly excited that our largest (and best ❤️) city is on track to return to its long history of generous social programs and again be a beacon to the nation. Much luck to Mayor Mamdani!

This kinda sounds funny but it’s not. Larry Summers is one of, if not the biggest bully currently active in academia. Why in God’s name is he still there? Why has he been there for the 20+ years that we’ve all known what he is like? WTF y’all been doing up at Harvard???

Sorry, but in what sense is this not already incredibly competitive? Also the received wisdom that discovery and innovation come only from competition (and in the bleak af examples given of manufacturing, that “competition” is simply lower wages) is not supported by evidence.

And to be clear, it is the important half of the job. Where you learn what’s going on in your field and come up with new ideas. It’s the intellectual part of the job. Why do ppl think an LLM can do that and *why would you want it to* ?!?!?!

The last example is especially dubious. As a scientist, I don’t think finding and synthesizing relevant literature is mindless scutwork we should outsource to a machine. That’s like, half the job of doing science.

I’m so tired of this. This one hits close to home, literally- I’m from RI, and I’ve spend a lot of time near Brown’s campus. I know well all of the places referenced in the media. When can we replace our leaders (in both parties) and end this?

This. When my son was born, I tried so, so hard to exclusively breastfeed him. I had two different lactation consultants. Nothing really worked- I could not produce enough milk and he needed formula. Some people act like this isn't a real problem, but it is. Scare-mongering about formula is harmful

My comment was a general one, so the specifics are unimportant. It’s about scientists defending leadership reflexively. If I had a$ for every time someone said about someone in leadership “they’re such a great scientist, just out of their depth/overwhemed” I wouldn’t need to worry about 2% paylines

Sarah Goetz @sarahgoetz.bsky.social · 29/11/2025
I’m US-based so not extremely familiar with ERC, but in general I’ve noticed ppl, and lately scientists specifically, are weirdly loyal to leaders even when said leaders are less than zealous in advocating for us. Ppl get very hung up on how much they admired the person as a scientist.

I mean the underlying problem is it doesn’t “know” anything. I think a lot of ppl think llms are doing something like taking their prompt, searching the whole internet for the answer, analyzing what they find and reporting back to you. But that isn’t how they work at all.

A main takeaway from the interview is that they make decisions by a majority vote of the membership, with folks generally expected to support the majority decision. So 1) it’s not just up to Zohran and 2)if Chi Ossé can convince a majority he should win their support. It’ll be a real debate, rightly

It’s not directly related to this primary, but The Dig podcast had a long interview with the NYC DSA co-chairs after Mandani won his primary. They talked about the DSA’s role in the primary campaign, their general electoral strategy, and how they choose candidates. July 1 episode.

That was actually the exact topic Summers was meant to be addressing with that speech. So for the president of Harvard’s thesis on the topic to be “women probably aren’t smart enough to hack it” was disappointing, worrisome, and upsetting.

Sarah Goetz @sarahgoetz.bsky.social · 16/11/2025
When Summers made this speech, he was the president of Harvard, and I was a 25 yo grad student in cell and molecular biology, staring down the extremely bleak numbers offemale faculty running research labs in my field (despite the fact that we were at least half of trainees).
110
Sarah Goetz @sarahgoetz.bsky.social · 16/11/2025
It should have. But Summers’ extremely obvious misogynist views were never disqualifying because Democratic politicians loved his neoliberal economics far more than they cared about the misogyny. That includes Obama and very much the Clintons.

This is kind of confusing. Will the extended deadlines apply even if you actually submitted the grants and they are in Commons? I realize you don't know. But this notice could really have used more clarity...

If many scientists (especially younger ones) are more angry about his legacy than sad he is gone, he chose that path himself.

James Watson’s entire public personality was punching down while also feeling entitled to public adulation. When I was a postdoc in NYC, I had to periodically encounter him when he would appear, seeking said attention in our community.
