Surveillance on bank accounts is *very* intrusive - it’s not just about money, it can reveal all kinds of personal and behavioural traits that are none of the government’s business. It’s also a matter of dignity: why should benefit claimants have to sacrifice that?

These are not isolated experiences.
“Working for UCU has broken me. I spent the whole of last year very unwell due to the treatment I received from the employer, and I am still in recovery. My motivation has been destroyed completely. None of my work, past or present, is valued, and I know they would rather I was not here and not trying to do good things for members."“And now, you look around at the place you were proud to work for and at the hollow husk it's become... where bullying is rife, where racism and inequality stare at you daily, where nepotism rules, and where colleagues falling to mismanagement and going off sick is now a regular occurrence."

Why do we strike? We’ll let our members give you some reasons why.
“I was off sick with work-related stress. I started crying every time I sat at my desk and I developed insomnia. I was having suicidal thoughts- my family were so scared. The stress at UCU is systemic and a direct result of a chaotic organisation that isn't functioning- there is no plan, no vision, no functioning management structure."“ ...watching so many wonderful colleagues get sick and in some cases not come back has been the most painful part of this though. Hearing black colleagues accused of unprofessionalism, insubordination & aggression, for doing the same things their white colleagues do... and then repeated denial that this is racism."“This is an organisation that does not care about staff development, never mind wellbeing... I could disappear tomorrow and I don't think anyone would know."

It gets worse… Members back at work today after taking lawful strike action are now being threaten with disciplinary procedures if their auto-replies mention the reason for their absence during future strikes. In what trade union world is this acceptable?
Extract from email to members threatening disciplinary action if they mention strikes in future out of office replies.

Just to reiterate, the employer in this case is a UNION who encourages its own members to raise awareness of their own action (just google UCU and ´out of office’s message wording to see multiple examples) but is censoring staff who try to raise awareness of theirs. #ucu
