Fuck yeah! I've been really wanting to see a modern take on PS1 Ghost in the Shell!

Ultimately it's just another "number goes up" power fantasy obscured with a sinister veneer of benevolence. The way these games use their sickly sweet aesthetics to gaslight you into feeling contented doing horrible things makes me feel insane.

In the new Animal Crossing, once I payed off my house, expanded it once and furnished the place, I found myself satisfied. I didn't want to "clean up" the nature and I didn't want a bigger house for more junk. The game didn't seem to know what to do with that. Not a great game for minimalists.

Totally agreed, especially in video games. So many cozy games have you participating in cute, wholesome capitalism and expansionism. Everything is commodified, from self expression to relationships. Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I find it so depressing and infantilizing.

I'm becoming increasingly fatigued and suspicious of the word "cozy."

fail2ban is exactly how I'm countering them, I created the jail right after I discovered the issue. My git website isn't anything fancy, just cgit through NGINX.

I was streaming over my self hosted site for movie night yesterday, and it was having more issues than normal. I checked the logs, it was because Meta was pummelling my poor little Raspberry Pi with over 100 requests a minute. It was scraping code from my git website to train their AI. Thanks Meta!

My Starfinder character, an influencer named Mimi, shamelessly clickbaits.
A clickbait thumbnail, reading "Ranking Human Food!"
An insectoid Shirren holds a slice of pizza, looking contemplative.

It's an open standard. I blame companies for not supporting it over blaming WebP itself. On the Linux side of things, it's perfectly supported by everything.

Oooh, I love this artwork! Whose the artist, and is it from any specific book?

I feel like a lot of tech companies see the slopzone that Facebook has become as aspirational. So many places coercing you into that sort of content. Stop trying to get me to look at Shorts, YouTube! It's so demeaning!

I did the OST for Horny Haunts! It only took until my fourth furry porn game soundtrack, but I finally got to make sex music! Listen/Buy here: 1029chris.bandcamp.com/album/horny-...

I wish more programs and sites would get on board with it, it's an open standard. Everything on the Linux side of things supports it just fine, everyone else can do it too.

I feel like this entire situation is due to the ephemeral nature of consoles, and console manufacturers being control freaks. I bet if people could buy old game roms for cheap, they totally would. It'd be unfair to expect developers to maintain a game for decades.

My legally acquired through YouTube "1080p" copy of Into The Spiderverse will only play at 480p since I use Linux. Thanks, guess I won't make that mistake again.

For how much work gets put into video DRM (blocking screenshare, lowering quality on linux, no .mp4 downloads of movie purchases, HDCP), it never actually works. Any movie or TV show has a 4K torrent within hours of its digital release. What's the point? It just punishes those who don't torrent.

Modeled and Textured it with Blockbench, and did the animations within CPMs editor (which was a hassle). Blockbench is quite nice!

Made a cute raptor player model in Minecraft! Used the Custom Player Model mod. I need to figure out a name for her still.

I just wrote up a whole spiel about "There are ways to avoid using the apps and stuff" but I sounded like a "personal responsibility" conservative. I feel a lot of things are making me misanthropic these days, especially as a trans person. I don't know how to reconcile that and feel solidarity.

I'm not a parent though, so I don't know if what I'm saying is realistic. At the very least it's food for thought.

Perhaps you could teach your kids about how little their favourite music artists make from Spotify? Try to teach them about how these coercive systems work and how to spot them. Encourage them to explore physical media by taking them to a record store? Make sure they know how to manage files.

I even sense dread when I mention alternatives even exist, as if forgoing the placating convenience of the centralized, proprietary solution is a worse fate. It feels like a lot of people are unwilling to grasp that fighting these bastards means forgoing some convenience.

I try not to be in person, but I can have moments of frustration. I worry the narrative that we're "forced" into these technologies has people less willing to try. I sense a deep well of helplessness when I talk to some people about ethical tech, like they've just given up hope of ever escaping.

Spotify wouldn't exist if people didn't use it, but they seem to prefer it. I tell people as a music artist that Spotify hurts us, but they don't care. MP3 players used to be mainstream, so I can't imagine it's a tech literacy thing! I don't get it!

I find it difficult to even want to feel solidarity with my fellow human beings. I'm always met with resistance when I try to educate others, it's as if humans want to live in this hellscape.

A lot of volunteers and non-profits are working on ethical operating systems like Linux, but it's always dismissed as being too difficult. It feels like we value convenience over ethics, over and over again. How can we make a difference when the average person seems to actually want this hellscape?

Sarah B. @sarahduck.ca · 16/12/2024
I feel like knowledge and education is the best short-term solution to this problem, but the article insists it's not possible for the average person. It feels so defeatist to say that, but perhaps it's true.

Lots of people are rightfully cynical about technology right now, feeling helpless as it gets more controlling. It's placating convenience is making us forget how to fight back. But knowledge is power, and free! Technology should be empowering! It'll take time and inconvenience, but it's worth it!

Currently living in my alternate universe tech bubble of open source technologies, it's pretty pleasant. My Linux computers don't try to coerce me into using AI chatbots or cloud subscriptions. Feature announcements don't fill me with dread. I have wobbly windows! It's a nice life.

Trapped in the loop of migration and enshitification, the inevitable fate of proprietary software. I hope Bluesky will be different, since it's open source.
