"What are you thinking about in there? You always hide away when you begin thinking hard, and your shell is impossible to crack." He dipped her low and brought her back up, spinning her in a circle as he did so. She wasn't familiar with this dance, but he led with an expertise that could only be mastered from years at court.
"I - I'm coming to terms with the fact that I don't know where I stand in the world anymore. And that I have to rely on others, I can't do it alone." He cocked his head to the side as they continued to spin around the floor, the band beginning to pick up pace. "I'm surprised you admitted that, particularly to me."
She shrugged and leaned into his frame, bringing her cheek to his shoulder, her hand wrapped around the back of him. The soft curl of his hair fell around the collar of his tine shirt, shining in the candlelight.
They danced in silence for the rest of tune, and as they waltzed their final steps, Alwyn whispered to her "Wherever our paths may lead after this small adventure, I shall forever be glad we met, Moira." He gave her a small bow and kissed her hand, walking her over to Zekiriel. "I shall fetch us all some refreshments."

Synopsis

As an Etheri, Mari lacks physical strength and mana control. She feels destined to play the supporting role for her partner Rhu (a natural talent and future Lord of Newhaven) and her cousin Junie (the confident and beautiful one). But when Mari learns that Junie is a member of the Blaze—a mysterious criminal organization—she isn’t sure how to move forward.

Mari finds herself learning about the Blaze and gets embroiled in their misadventures. By the time Junie’s identity is leaked to the Etheri villages and the Blaze comes under attack, Mari is no longer convinced that she can pick a side, but failing to do so begins to endanger not just herself, but the people she loves. Mari must choose where her loyalties lie: with her village, with her friends, or with herself.

If I did what Rhu wanted, and stopped involving myself with the Blaze entirely, would that just mean avoiding conflict instead of addressing it? At the same time, avoiding the Blaze just made logical sense—the Blaze was conflict.

I was able to sit up, and a wave of nausea hit me, making me lean over the side of the slab and heave up my instant noodles. Bile and proprietary spices burned my throat.

There was something reassuring about being naked with your partner, even in a non-sexual scenario. The vulnerable familiarity of it was calming, somehow. I was glad that he was there with me, supporting me as always, even though he didn't want to be there. I felt selfish, but Rhu was good at making me feel like everything was fine, even when it wasn't.
