She adjusted the lace on her shoulders and met his gaze with a leveled stare that mirrored his own coldness.

“You needn’t worry, sir,” she said, her voice surprisingly crisp. “I am merely trying to reconcile the man in front of me with the one I was promised in the letters.”

A flicker of mild interest passed over his face. “Is that so?” he murmured, arms folded tightly. “Fortune favors you, then. I am not the man from your letters.”
