Sara Charles @saracharles.bsky.social · 14/09/2026It was very nice to come face-to-face with little Hugo Pictor today (MS Bodl. 717, fol. 287v). Unusually for a medieval scribe, Hugo is depicted as left-handed. He was also on the front cover of my book! #bookhistory #medievalsky 1337

Sara Charles @saracharles.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Well, you probably could before adding the copperas - medieval medical recipes suggest galls for stomach ailments. Galls taste absolutely FOUL so I think it's the old adage that if it tastes nasty it must be good for you. NB I am absolutely NOT endorsing drinking this 😆 110
Sara Charles @saracharles.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Continuing the process. After leaving for 8 days (stirring once a day), I filtered the wine through a linen cloth, discarded the galls and added copperas (ferrous sulphate). It has taken on a distinct sherry bouquet 🍷 160
