This week, we published the first paper in the U.S. Climate Collection titled, "Research Priorities for Robust Climate Assessments in the United States". The paper was led by Melissa Kenney, @bobkopp.net, & me, with 175 authors helping outline climate risks. cee.engineering.cmu.edu/news/2026/09...

After spending the last week creating a poster for my first scientific conference in Adobe InDesign, I am convinced their business strategy is to make their software hard to use so only people who started in the 90s can still do it! I took a 10 year break from Adobe and yikes.

Whether it’s a “cruel heat day” in Japan, “roasting like a sweet potato” in Taiwan or “barbecue mode” in Shenzen, we all need new words to describe extreme heat waves putting humanity at risk. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/23/w...

It’s So Hot That Japan Needs a New Word for It
Japan this week recorded its first kokushobi, a term that means “cruel heat day,” as temperatures reached 104 degrees. It is not the only country that has scrambled for a new summer vocabulary.

As a doctoral student at Brown, my research focuses on heat related health risks to vulnerable populations. Temperatures just a few degrees above normal can be dangerous, especially for children, pregnant women, older populations, and people with disabilities or chronic conditions.

Sara Brinton @sarabrinton.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Scientists often estimate typical mortality rate and then compare that to the actual mortality rate during and after a heat wave to estimate excess mortality. Increasingly we also try to estimate heat exposure and specific causes of death.

Sara Brinton @sarabrinton.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Doctoral student here who studies heat and health! 🙋🏻‍♀️ It’s an estimate because it is difficult to measure deaths caused directly or indirectly by heat exposure. Heat-related diagnoses that might be recorded on a death certificate include stroke, heart, kidney or respiratory failure, infection, etc.

I believe it’s also related to the architecture of some buildings (e.g., historic buildings with about 5 floors under metal roofs basically become ovens). It may also be related to age.

Now do spaces where people most at risk for heat-related health impacts live. From what I understand, there are more heat protections for workers than residents at nursing homes. The lack of regulation of indoor temperatures could be deadly.

If the cooling is happening with renewable energy and in a way that doesn’t intensify heat in surrounding buildings, I don’t see any reason to be against it. AC is just one of many ways to protect people from the harmful effects of heat exposure, but it is important.

This is fascinating look at the use of grey market peptides in the US. The idea that people can do their own research to determine if is safe to inject an unverified substance into their body is so misleading. Peptides may be “naturally occurring”, but there is no regulation of what’s in the vials.

Would love to see NYC work better for aspiring dancers and artists. Our son is there training with ABT. The cost of housing makes it so hard for us to support him, even when his training is on scholarship. For ballet and theater, NYC is the dream but it’s out of reach financially for so many!

It is not possible to separate science from politics in the current climate. The federal assault on research means we have no choice but to be political if we continue to do the work we believe matters.

While I can’t speak for the board or shareholders, my team and the executives we reported to did legitimately care. It’s sad that the voices of employees are silenced too.

Having worked inside a few corps during peak Pride, some were doing a lot more than sponsoring parades. I led a project at Expedia to help when LGBTQ travelers experienced discrimination. I am sad and angry that the DEI backlash means corps have backed away from meaningful initiatives like that too.

It seems like some of this could and should be challenged in court. Prohibitions on doing research with non-federal funds and the limits on scientific communication seem like violations of the first amendment. Is there an NIH regulation published?

Brown has claimed they need to be fiscally responsible with the University’s resources. With tuition increasing by 4.25% next year and the endowment delivering 9.5% returns on average for the last 20 years, Brown can afford more than 0% for the workers who make the University work. #unionstrong

Brown has claimed that graduate students’ benefits are better than faculty and staff benefits, which is not true. “Benefit-eligible” employees at Brown enjoy generous retirement and education benefits worth thousands of dollars a year.
