That's all good for your in-person activism. What about donations? Using publicly available data, sharpen your giving to competitive races to make a disproportionate impact. In Senate races, some surprises: South Dakota and Kansas give you the most ROI! samwang.substack.com/p/senate-mon...

But you have to use all the data: national trends, local history, and where available, polls. Use case: here in New Jersey, we learn that the swing districts are not just NJ-7 (everyone here already knows that), but also NJ-2. samwang.substack.com/p/catching-a... Pictured: NJ-2's Zack Mullock (D).

The risk ratios are implausible: 2.5 for all cancers at 2 km, and 30-fold for thyroid cancer at 2 km. Routine plant emissions cannot do this. And the definition of "proximity" introduces artifacts. Fitting log(rate) linearly in 1/d forces a sharp peak near the source that fades by about 20–25 km.

the thing about impeaching Vought is that it will ruin his life. pull his kids and wife in for sixteen hour depositions. refer them all for perjury. scream in his face. when you're done, if it didn't work, do it again.

Yes, that has occurred to me as well. Empirically, it is generally the case that swing districts are more movable than partisan districts. But based on the factors you cite, Van Drew could hang on. He certainly is his own animal.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

One simple way that you know the United States is not a full democracy & has experienced significant democratic backsliding is that, in actual democracies, it does not matter "which party runs elections" heading into the next one. "Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections"
