This is exactly why I don't pitch NY mag: they dangle their writers in front on the internet like pinatas. Editors have a duty of care, and sometimes that means you gently tell a writer, "hey, you're 22, maybe you don't need the entire internet to know this about you."

For about a year now I've been fantasizing about an entirely new kind of literary event: exciting, theatrical, and a little bit combative. Yesterday at the @barrelhouse.bsky.social conference, @writesloud.bsky.social, @poeticmoni.bsky.social, and @zachpowers.bsky.social and I pulled it off.
Four improbably good-looking authors, one wearing a Strunk & White crown of ill-deserved triumph, and one wearing a PULPED sign of ignominyA roomful of people holding up signs with the author's face, with stars in his eyes like nipples on instagramcards used by the audience to vote for the winner of each round, on top of a handmade RAPID FIRE round poster

I worry I'll never write anything more perfect than the phrase "a roar of fuck-words" www.vice.com/en/article/i...
A perfect paragraph: The opening notes to the fourth occurrence of “The Boys Are Back in Town” was met with an immediate shattering of glass, a roar of fuck-words, and the small but rapid egress of people whose ears were closed to the good news (the good news about the town, and the boys who were back in it). Two wild-eyed men, drunken and furious, descended upon the jukebox and lifted it away from the wall to get at the plug. When things had resettled, there was a line to queue up songs at the jukebox, which I joined.

I'm still thinking about this. I don't mean ya gotta hand it to Izzard. The best thing you can say is that it's a colossal feat of memorization, which is why it felt one step up from watching someone recite Pi for 2.5 hours. But from minute 1 it had the stink of a vanity project no one said no to.

Saw Eddie Izzard do Hamlet tonight. I don’t mean she played Hamlet. I mean she played every single role with no props or costumes. It’s one of the most catastrophic failures I’ve ever seen on a stage. Bad on every conceivable level. Good. Artists should fail more. That‘s what risk means.

FYI if you use AI to write emails to authors, they'll be indistinguishable from the slop scams we're all getting on a daily basis (and just in general... if you use AI to write me an email I will treat it as I treat all AI—feel a moment of contempt and then ignore it)
