In the middle of the UK. Cricket, cats, coasts, calm. Most likely to order a flat white and a cheese twist. Thank God we have this government. Just imagine…

It’s the combi I think - in her exam year (9 GCSEs) she’s having to think about the next 2 stages, makes her more scared about failing, as that reduces options. She is lucky to have support but a base level of anxiety means she starts in a negative place. That’s different to my ancient experience.

She’s an over thinker by nature, but the amount she has to think about is way too much. And that’s before her worries about scary life in Britain today - politics, war, climate, misogyny. Feels like there’s no confidence in what’s ahead for her, in such an uncertain world.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social my 15 year old daughter is in GCSE year and choosing 16-18 options. She’s trying to think so far ahead it’s adding to already heavy anxiety - A Levels or other qualifications, for which courses, at which universities, for which careers, with what economic prospects.

Feels like Starmer and Macron were part of the set up. Warmth, false security, backslapping and then bang - Zelenskyy’s the bad guy and praise to Putin. Sickening.

Sammy Bluesky @samonsky.bsky.social · 28/02/2025
The whole encounter felt like a trap laid by the US for Zelenskyy. To reduce Putin’s aggression to ‘he doesn’t much love you either’ is insulting. Trump has chosen his side.

No bone - they need to do/communicate better, quickly. I'm just questioning their motives for dismissing the EU offer. Our views differ on whether they're overwhelmed and naive, or useless and ill-intentioned. And, whether that makes any difference. We're probably equally disappointed to be here.

Sammy Bluesky @samonsky.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
I don't buy that. Yes they've scored own goals & communications are dire. Cabinet is definitely overwhelmed by task size, but to me they look unconvincing & uncertain rather than incapable or corrupt. That's why I doubt they'd turn down the chance of a positive EU story unless there was a reason.

Granted it's a huge 'if..' But he badly needs a win, so what other reason is there for dismissing it out of hand? Not like there's a better plan somewhere...and I've always believed the Brexit election position was just one part of a long game.

Right decision, and tbf a win was unlikely. But you can sense England's desperation to get points, v painful.

EU talks must be happening behind closed doors though, surely? There's nothing to be gained from going public right now, everything gets shredded and subverted by media. If we're truly dismissing theor offer, it's bonkers. If Starmer is playing a long and cautious game, it makes more sense.

Sammy Bluesky @samonsky.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
Dismissing the EU's offer does appear a bit self-flagellating (especially in the absence of other magic growth plans). Surely it must be happening behind closed doors though, or as part of wider talks. Starmer's hardly going to document negotiations publicly. So what other response could they make?

Same here. We all went (parents + teen) and each loved it for different reasons. Every bit of the music was gorgeous, the casting - yes, Chalamet and Norton but especially Monica Barbero - was impeccable, and the NY village atmosphere crackled. Such a warm movie, there's a lot to love.

6 in 10 people in the UK have unfavourable opinions of #Trump and #Musk. That's not just the reasonable people on Bluesky, that's a representative UK sample, from research by Ipsos. Feels like the the other 4 are making an awful lot of noise. www.ipsos.com/en-uk/6-10-b...

Every time I visit Twitter I'm repulsed and tempted to delete, to never go back. But cricket, football and an unhealthy fascination with the weird-wingers over there keep me checking in. Am I just addicted and in denial? Probs.

We’re all immune to it at this point but we have to remind ourselves that this is an abomination. A catastrophe. A grotesque corruption. And a betrayal of the millions who fought and sacrificed in the great wars of the 20th Century to escape a world that works like this.

I love the concept of an FA Cup for women's cricket and it's exciting to see the draw go right through to the final. This news is one of the very few reasons I'm still hanging out with Twitter. The sooner cricket, especially Northants, gets onto BlueSky, the better! #cricket #ecb #steelbacks

I found this 'In Case of War' brochure from the Swedish government fascinating, and wonder if there's something similar for the UK. Also, because I've read way too many dystopian novels, I think I know most of this stuff.

Gladiator II vs Gladiator. So similar it's more of a tribute film than a sequel, but entertaining and visually gorgeous. Plus there's Paul Mescal, and a warrior rhino and some Hunger Games style mutant monkeys. Teen daughter and I thought it was loads of blood and gore and fun.

I need to stop watching #GMB. I realised my body tenses up during interviews as the presenters (Madeley & Reid to Bridget Phillipson this morning) talk over guests, ignore answers & lay traps. No useful info gets shared. I hate this combative gotcha culture, it debases both politics & journalism 😡

I would definitely tell people at conferences, in the pub and on here that I loved the John Lewis ad. Idealistic I know, but gifting should be about really knowing someone and making them feel special and seen. I think the ad does that, although her initial stress is also a bit triggering 🤣

They’ll do anything for a gotcha moment, believing that’s what we want. I don’t, it’s a cheap and predictable tactic that tells me nothing interesting.
