In Monday’s Record, Luisa D’Amato writes about the barriers candidates face in reaching our neighbours who live in apartment buildings. My campaign has been to every corner of Ward 10 and made a concerted effort to connect with voters no matter what kind of building they live in. #kitchener

Newspaper headline, people in apartments, get less democracy than people in houses. Article written by Luisa D’Amato for the Waterloo Region Record

People living in houses get a chance to meet the candidate. They get a card or brochure left at the door. They can see who cared enough to stop by, and who didn’t bother to come around. People in apartment buildings are far less likely to get any of that attention.

It’s disappointing to see the building manager is not aware of their responsibilities he said. This is not just someone coming in selling something. This is the Democratic process.

As co-owner of Full Circle Foods, I work with local farmers and producers, helping neighbours to make local and zero-waste shopping decisions. Together, we’ve saved over 167,000 single use packages from the landfill. We can think global and act local in Kitchener to do our part for the planet.

We deserve ambitious climate action: so what should we do in Kitchener?

We deserve clean energy

Design neighbourhoods with enough density for efficient transit, utilities and district energy

Offer affordable heat pumps, electric water heaters, solar panels, and battery storage via Kitchener Utilities to reduce fossil fuel use

We deserve local food security

Uphold the countryside line to protect farmland

Expand access to community gardens so nobody is stuck on a wait list

Allow more food stores close to home, prioritizing local and independent shops

Explore the creation of a second Kitchener Market location

We deserve healthy ecosystems

Accelerate creek naturalization efforts, increasing biodiversity and flood resilience

Enact a private tree protection bylaw to prevent clear-cutting during redevelopment
