Excerpt from from Marooned Off Ceres.

So, there we were, walking through the centre of town. Mother had allowed me to paint her shell with a rainbow for the occasion and she looked very snazzy. I had blue, pink and white stripes on my cheek and lesbian flag-coloured nails. It was lots of fun. Loud and joyous and, frankly, queer as fuck. Emma was there as well, walking along beside me, unseen by anyone else. As we passed by the War Memorial, she turned to me, a look of fear on her face.
‘There’s somebody with a gun,’ she said. ‘He’s going to shoot me—I mean, Mother.’

Publisher, Cheryl Morgan said: “Thanks to the ongoing erosion on civil rights in the UK and USA, it is becoming harder and harder for stories with queer themes to get accepted by mainstream publishers. This is especially true for trans stories, and for trans-identified authors. At Wizard’s Tower we will continue to publish queer stories, by queer writers, because we know there is a need for them.”

We expect to have Wiz Duo #4 available in the autumn, hopefully for FantasyCon.

Text of the Press Release:

Wizard’s Tower Announces Wiz Duo #4
Wizard’s Tower is delighted to announce the fourth in our series of back-to-back novellas. Wiz Duo #4 will include stories by Ellen Mellor and Stephen Cox.

As usual we have selected stories that complement each other. In this case both Ellen’s ‘Marooned Off Ceres’ and Stephen’s ‘Top Tips for Loving a Lizard’ are first contact stories in which the lead protagonist is queer-identified.

Ellen Mellor said: “I’m so happy that Wizards Tower chose my story for publication. I loved every moment of writing (and rewriting and redrafting and…) ‘Marooned Off Ceres’ and the finished product (with absolutely spot-on editing by Jo Hall) exceeded my every wish for it. It’s exactly the sort of story I love—a science fiction story in which the trans identity of the protagonist is an important part of who she is but doesn’t overshadow the rest of her. I feel that stories written by and centring trans people are needed more than ever to show that we have our own voice and we will not allow ourselves to be silenced.”

Stephen Cox said: “This is the story of my heart, the story I wished my teenage self could read. I wrote it for the glorious joy of writing it, but I’m also conscious of how sinister forces want to put us back in a box. We must imagine better futures, because we can make what we can see and feel.”

Editors Roz Clarke & Joanne Hall said: “We knew we wanted to publish Ellen’s novella as soon as we read it. It’s rare that a story makes us spit tea laughing AND makes us cry, and the ending was so perfect. And Stephen’s story arriving at the same time just felt like serendipity. It’s funny, raunchy, romantic and satisfyingly twisty. We both have a real soft spot for first contact stories, and we’re delighted that these two novellas work so well together.”

Reading The Silmarillion and Tolkien says trans rights!
Quote from The Silmarillion (p9) describing the Valar coming to Earth.
'Now the Valar took to themselves shape and hue: and because they were drawn into the World by love of the Children of Ilúvatar, for whom they hoped, they took shape after that manner which they had beheld in the Vision of Ilúvatar, save only in majesty and splendour. Moreover their shape comes of their knowledge of the visible World, rather than of the World itself; and they need it not. save only as we use raiment, and yet we may be naked and suffer no loss of our being. Therefore the Valar may walk, if they will, unclad, and then
even the Eldar cannot clearly perceive them, though they be present. But when they desire to clothe themselves the Valar take upon them forms some as of male and some as of female; for that difference of temper they had even from their beginning, and it is but bodied forth in the choice of each, not made by the choice, even as with us male and female may be shown by the raiment but is not made thereby. But the shapes wherein the Great Ones array themselves are not all times like to the shapes of the kings and queens of the Children of Ilúvatar; for at times they may clothe themselves in their own thought, made visible in forms of majesty and dread.'

I finally got an email from my MP in response to asking her to put her name to the EDM. And guess what? It's full of the usual 'dignity and respect' bullshit that the government have been spewing. It reads like it's a standard letter from Central Office.
Email from Emma Food MP, subject: Update: EHRC Code of Practice (Case Ref: EF14218)

Dear Ellen,

Thank you for contacting me about the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s updated Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations, which includes guidance on single-sex spaces.

I strongly believe trans people deserve safety, dignity and respect. In our local area and across the country, everyone should be able to be themselves and live their lives free from intimidation or abuse.

I am concerned that too often the conversation surrounding this guidance has become a vehicle for political point-scoring. We must not lose sight of the real people at the heart of this discussion. Trans people should be able to live freely, safely and with dignity, and I stand firmly against the discrimination and hostility that many continue to face.

As you highlight, last year the Supreme Court ruled that sex in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex. After careful consideration and scrutiny by Ministers, updated guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission was laid in Parliament on 21 May to reflect this. Parliament had 40 days to consider the guidance, up to 9 July, and we now await further updates from the Government. As a Government Whip, I am unable to sign any Early Day Motions (EDMs) tabled my fellow members of Parliament.

I know that trans people and organisations have expressed concerns about the new guidance. I think it is very important to emphasise that neither the Supreme Court judgment, nor the new code, alter the fact that trans people remain a protected group under the Equality Act 2010 and should be able to live their lives free from harassment and discrimination.Second half of email.

The Government has said that the guidance, while reflecting the findings of the Supreme Court in terms of access to single-sex spaces, also emphasises that service providers should make sure that trans people have access to essential services, such as toilets. It says they should consider if and how trans people may be disadvantaged and suggests a holistic approach to service provision by providing a mix of services, which may include both separate or single-sex and mixed-sex services. While single-sex services should be provided on the basis of biological sex, an association that wants to be trans-inclusive can do so by basing its membership on the protected characteristics of both sex and gender reassignment. Specialist legal advice should be taken, if needed.

It is extremely important to note the Supreme Court warned against reading its judgment “as a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another”. As it explained, transgender people are protected by the Equality Act 2010, passed by the last Labour Government - not only against discrimination through the protected characteristic of gender reassignment - but also against direct discrimination, indirect discrimination and harassment in substance in their acquired gender. These protections are available to transgender people whether they possess a Gender Recognition Certificate or not.

I back the Government in its belief that everybody must be treated with dignity and respect and that we must uphold the Equality Act. I also believe that now more than ever, people in positions of authority, such as politicians, must speak out about the importance of our shared values of tolerance, respect and fair-mindedness.Third part of email.

Finally, I am pleased with the Government's announcement of a trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices. No one should be pressured or subjected to attempts to change or suppress who they are. I believe this is an important step in protecting LGBT+ people from harmful and coercive practices and ensuring everyone can live freely and with dignity.

Thank you once again for contacting me about this important issue.

If you would like to be kept up to date on my work in Parliament, and across the Cramlington and Killingworth constituency, I send out regular updates to residents. You can sign up here.

Yours sincerely,

Last one.
(as you will remember, I lost my last job due to stress related illness caused by transphobic bullying). I did manage to go out recently to an event that I thought would be safe. However, while there, I became too anxious to go to the toilet and so ended up losing control of my bladder on the way home which, I am sure you can understand was incredibly distressing to me. This anxiety will only increase if the Code of Practice is signed into law.

It should be noted that this Code of Practice will, according to the government’s own Equality Impact Assessment, would risk wide-ranging harms to trans people including a “disproportionate risk of violence and sexual assault" in some circumstances and fails to meet any of the legal obligations placed on Ministers by the Public Sector Equality Duty in regards to the protected characteristic of gender reassignment.

There are two things I would ask of you. Firstly, please add your name to Nadia Whittome's motion (EDM 240) to disapprove the draft Code of Practice. This prayer-type motion is not a regular EDM expressing an opinion, but the mechanism in the code’s scrutiny process for MPs to formally object to and reject it. It’s likely to be the only way to get this put to a debate or vote. Secondly, if there is a debate, I would very much appreciate it if you could speak out against this unacceptable legal mess.

and again...
This will have the effect of pushing trans people into a nebulous 'third space' that may or may not exist depending on whether or not the service has the ability, budget or desire to make one. In addition to this, there is the provision that people can be directly challenged if an "individual’s physique or physical appearance, behaviour or concerns raised by other service users" (para 13.168). This is just opening the door for abuse and discrimination based on whether a person - and again, this will affect women far more than men and, indeed already has - fits into cultural and social norms for gendered appearance (with no regard for whether they are cis or trans).

If this Code of Practice becomes law it will have an immediate detrimental effect to trans people's health, over and above the impact it has already had on our mental health. Para 13.153 states that only [cis] women and trans men will need to use an outpatient OBGYN service and can refuse to treat trans women (and cis men). If this had been implemented before now, it would have directly affected me as, following my gender confirmation surgery, I had a small fistula within my vagina that was only discovered by attending an OBGYN service. Without access to the service because it does not "offer any treatment which is suitable for a man or a trans woman and therefore can refuse to treat them" it would have remained undiscovered and untreated.

Since the Code of Practice was laid before Parliament my mental health has significantly worsened. I am now finding that I am too nervous to go to places where there may be groups of cisgender people who are unknown to me. I have had to increase the level of my anti-depressant medication to try to combat this but it has not yet prevented me from cancelling a job interview because I was too anxious about going outside and too tired from interrupted sleep caused by worry about what this means (as you will remember, I lost my last job due to stress related illness cause…

The alt text got cut off so I'll keep repeating the image until it all gets included:
(https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/nov/19/baby-girl-registered-wrong-sex-mansfield-registration-office). According to this ruling, even if she does eventually get a gender recognition certificate to correct her birth certificate, she will still be 'male' for purposes of sex discrimination cases. Essentially, this is a form of misogynist sex essentialism which reduces people - and, let's be honest here, when I say 'people' I mostly mean 'women' - to their genitals and whether they can be used for procreation. This is shown by the amount of time anti-trans activists refer to women as being 'producers of large gametes' and lament that "girls are removing breasts that have never known a lovers caress." (https://ephromjosine.medium.com/the-sexual-misadventures-of-terfs-b01e57817e72) which I hope you will agree is more than a little bit creepy.

Now that I have written that paragraph, which is merely the first of many of my objections to the Code, I realise that if I went into that depth on every single one of them, it would turn into a document as long as the Code itself, which you do not have the time to read, or I to write. I will therefore, try to paraphrase more while recommending you read this excellent guide which I agree with in its entirety: https://www.scottishtrans.org/supreme-court-ruling-on-sex-in-the-equality-act/our-thoughts-on-the-ehrcs-updated-code-of-practice-may-2026/

The biggest objection are the statements that if a service is offered to [cis] women and trans women or [cis] men and trans men then it automatically becomes a mixed sex service and is likely to be discriminatory if it excludes cis men (in the case of the women's space) or vice versa (para 13.130 & 13.131) while at the same time, the idea that a trans person's appearance might cause distress or discomfort for other service users is put forward as a legitimate aim for excluding the trans person from services aimed at their 'biological sex (para 13.119 & 12.120). This will have the e…

I've also just written to my MP @emmafoodymp.bsky.social to ask her to put her name to the Nadia Whittome's EDM 240 against the EHRC Code of Practice using the tool at equalrecognition.eaction.org.uk/rejectthecode Please feel free to use any part of what I wrote, if you find it helpful.
Dear Emma,

You asked me to get in touch if and when the Equalities Minister put forward the government's response to the EHRC Code of Practice on the Equality Act 2010. As I am sure you are aware, Ms Phillipson laid the document before Parliament on May 21st. It has taken me a couple of weeks to both process the information and also to overcome the increased anxiety and depression it has caused in me.

While the Code of Practice in its current form is not as vicious as the original draft, it is still absolutely terrible. Essentially, if it is allowed to become law it will become a trans 'Jim Crow' law for this country, allowing for and even encouraging segregation, discrimination, gender policing (of both trans and cis people - especially women) and human rights violations.

There are many points which are objectionable and I'll try to summarise them them here.

Firstly, there is the tying down of 'sex' to mean 'biological sex' (para 2.88 & 2.89). This is based on the Supreme Court ruling from last year which was welcomed by many people in the government as providing 'clarity'. However, this is a false statement. It claims a person's 'biological sex' is the sex of a person at birth. This is determined by the judgement of a single person who looks at the babies external genitals. This is fine for the vast majority of cases where the existence of a penis equals 'man' and that of a vulva equals 'woman'. However, it does not cover the existence of intersex people, some of whom do not even display their 'intersexness' until later in life and those where it is obvious at birth routinely have their 'biological sex' determined for them by gender confirmation surgery at an age where they are unable to consent. Then there are the issues where someone's sex may be recorded incorrectly on their birth certificate, such as Lilah, the little girl whose sex was recorded as male in 2024 (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/nov/19/baby-girl-registered-wrong-sex-mansfield-regist…

But then they can choose to exclude you based on 'vibes'. Para 13.179. Basically, we're fucked.
13.179
Where there remains a genuine concern about the accuracy of the response to a request for an individual to confirm their sex, then the service provider person performing public functions or association should consider what action is proportionate in the circumstances. There is no type of official record or document in the UK which provides reliable evidence of sex. For example, sex on passports and driving licences may be changed with or without a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), and birth certificates may reflect the acquired gender of someone who has a GRC. Therefore, it is unlikely to be proportionate or practical to ask for further evidence of a person's sex. In such circumstances, it is likely to be necessary to weigh up the relevant factors to decide whether to exclude the individual from the service or association or to permit them to continue to access it

I've just discovered something that proves the entire Artemis II launch thing is a con and they planted the evidence in plain sight!!! Look, they are telling us it's all done with AI! (Please note: This is a joke. Honest.) images.nasa.gov/details/KSC-...
Technicians are shown at NASA’s Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in Florida on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, with one of two side flame deflectors that will be used to support NASA’s Artemis II launch. Each side flame deflector has two pillar-like extensible columns which are jacked into place to help support mobile launcher 1 when the vehicle is being fueled. During liftoff, the flame deflectors help contain the plume of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket down into the flame trench.

There are two structures silhouetted in the background that look like they make giant letters 'A' and 'I'.

It's a guy who only has one leg and the film is called the Human Monopod. And here he is, trying to attach is mouth to his own arse.
A drawing of a man-like creature with only one leg and a massive foot. He's lying on his back and he's got the foot up so it shades his entire upper body.
It's a drawing of a Monopod from the Nuremberg Chronicle from 1493.

My old job decided to take my fancy desk and chair away on Friday. Fortunately, I'd kept my old one in storage just in case. This is my new set up. I rather like it.
A picture of an office. There is a desk with a PC with three monitors at the far end. On the wall behind it there is a both trans flag and a lesbian flag. The wall to the right is covered in posters all overlapping one another. On the right is a bookshelf. On a ledge above the bookshelf a black and white cat is lounging comfortably.

Except trans children. From www.gov.uk/government/n...
A paragraph from the government press release on the new DFE 'gender guidance for schools'.

Quote:
It clearly sets out that single sex spaces must be protected. Without exception, no child should be made to feel unsafe through inappropriate mixed sex sport, and there should be no sharing of school and college toilet facilities over eight years old or mixed sex sleeping arrangements on trips.

The sentence " Without exception, no child should be made to feel unsafe through inappropriate mixed sex sport." Has been highlighted.

Screenshot of CLZ Books page for The Letters of JRR Tolkien

Plot text reads
The comprehensive collection of letters spanning the adult life of one of the world’s greatest storytellers, now revised and expanded to include more than 150 previously unseen letters, with revealing new insights into The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.J.R.R. Tolkien, creator of the languages and history of Middle-earth as recorded in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, was one of the most prolific letter-writers of this century. Over the years he wrote a mass of letters – to his publishers, to members of his family, to friends, and to 'fans' of his books – which often reveal the inner workings of his mind, and which record the history of composition of his works and his reaction to subsequent events.A selection from Tolkien's correspondence, collected and edited by Tolkien's official biographer, Humphrey Carpenter, and assisted by Christopher Tolkien, was published in 1981. It presented, in Tolkien's own words, a highly detailed portrait of the man in his many aspects: storyteller, scholar, Catholic, parent, friend, and observer of the world around him.In this revised and expanded edition of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, it has been possible to go back to the editors’ original typescripts and notes, restoring more than 150 letters that were excised purely to achieve what was then deemed a ‘publishable length’, and present the book as originally intended.Enthusiasts for his writings will find much that is new, for the letters not only include fresh information about Middle-earth, such as Tolkien’s own plot summary of the entirety of The Lord of the Rings and a vision for publishing his ‘Tales of the Three Ages’, but also many insights into the man and his world. In addition, this new selection will entertain anyone who appreciates the art of letter-writing, of which J.R.R. Tolkien was a master.
