Sorry for not posting much for the last little while, for anyone who DO follow me here for updates. I’ve been in Editing Jail working to get Kamigoe Book 1 out in time for launch. I wanna do this book justice. Can’t wait to share. #WIP #writesky #editing

A little late to the game today, but still a good one. We love a parent that furthers their child’s love of reading. And Layla certainly does that with Ditta, her and Evie’s fourth child of six. #writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity #TFOTSnip
I wasn't going to turn her down-especially when Ditta had such an appetite for books, and to tell the truth I was thankful for the company. Delaying my day by a few hours was a small price to pay to foster my child's interest in reading, and for a few hours to spend talking with her perhaps. At sixteen, Ditta was less moody than Ella had been, but she wasn't as open and forth coming with details of her life as she once had been. Sometimes she still talked to Evie, but her and I had found it harder to communicate, especially since she'd chosen to stop pursuing school as an option.
I decided to take my time that day then. It's not like I didn't have it to spare. I didn't have to worry about going in to the clinic today; I had taken the day before off because of Evie's arrest, and today was the start of my 'weekend' when I'd take two days off to get things done around the house. I'd be back at work by Thursday though, if I didn't go in tomorrow to make up for the extra day off.
But for today, I would spend it dealing with my share of the weekly chores, which meant today was market day for me.
Ditta helped me get Buck and Chester tacked up and hitched to
the big wagon. Buck was less ornery than usual, but then again he always did like Ditta best. We were never sure quiet why. Chester was a sweet, biddable boy regardless of who handled him.

Another snip from Yuri Cowgirls. A little bit of Layla POV! #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
I was so certain my position as the town doctor and back-up coroner meant he didn't want to ruffle our feathers too much. I'd been the first real, licensed medical doctor in town in half a decade when I showed up. Before me the dentist was doing his best but... well it wasn't a perfect system.
But then Sheriff Tweedy showed up this morning, and took Evie away and... every fear she'd ever harboured and carried in her soul became mine.
How I kept myself together I don't know. I'd been so afraid—I still am. I can't imagine a life without Evie. It hasn't always been perfect, but it's been ours, and we've always had each other. We've been together, through thick and thin. Lean times, good times, hard times, drought, feast, famine; it wasn't so bad because we had each other, and then eventually the kids. In an instant that security was shattered.
Oh, I was always certain I'd die before Evie. Eventually she'd piss off the wrong person and she wouldn't be able to talk or fight her way out of it, or her tough life would catch up with her body and how she treated it, and she'd die. But I'd thought we'd at least be old and have some grandkids at that point. I wasn't ready to part now.

Been in a bit of a writing funk lately but I think I cleared that creative hurdle. Also been in editing jail with Kamigoe, prepping for the launch. But today, have a snip from a quick scene I wrote of a WIP that’s been bouncing around my head. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
"Been you to Rhamara, Master Cay?" Ryth asked.
Cay grunted. "A time there was, when naught by the Senators and the Emperor himself could utter the Sacred City's name."
A smile crossed Aelfwynn's face. "A time there was when Rhamara had earned such reverence. Alas, now it is a ruin. A pale shadow of its former self, Sir Cay. Rhamara it shall be, henceforth."
The City Atop the World. The Sacred City. The Marbled Crown. It had many names in its heyday...but Aelfwynn spoke true. Rhamara was a ruin, and its Empire long gone. The memory of the Empire was but a spectre to the folks of this day and age, and it was never coming back.
"I take it you have been to the city, Master Cay?" Ryth
pressed.
Cay's lip curled. "I have."
"How long ago?"
"Long enough..."
"How long?"
"Not long enough to see it in its prime under the earliest Princeps, nor under the first Imperator Mundi a few centuries later, but enough to know that even in its twilight, the city was a marvel..." The disgust left Cay's face, and instead was replaced by a look of longing. The same look one had for a lover, or a lost friend who was dead and never to return.

Giving you lucky people a two-fer cuz I’ve been busy lately! HONSE for everyone! CW for the first on. Some light mention of fire arms and death. The second one will mean something to anyone who has ever considered themselves a horse person. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
First and foremost, I needed to get my wife out of jail. Second, of course, I needed to figure out if my wife was actually the cold-blooded killer Tweedy was making him out to be. I'm not naïve, nor am I a child. I'd seen Evie kill before. I'd watch her shoot Raiders down off their horses with very little remorse. I'd seen her gun down Raiders, men and women of all ages, as they ran off after a failed raid on the ranch. She never cared if their backs were turned.
I'd seen her gun a child down once. Not much older than Teo was at the time, sixteen or seventeen. He'd tried to steal Kala from the barn, and the horse kicked him. He was bloodied, dazed, and tried to flee. Evie took his head off with her 44 before he even knew what hit him.
To this day I still can't even think about what she did to that one young Raider who'd once tried to go after Ella when we were out in the overseeing the herd while they were in the far fields grazing. The pony and mare came to a sudden stop and I knew we'd arrived.
Not a moment too soon. I took a sniff, and set my jaw to stead it. Tweedy dismounted first, then attempted to help me down, but I refused. I could get on and off my own horses—or ponies—by myself, and the day I couldn't, I
should be taken out back and be shot, because life wasn't worth living if it couldn't be lived from the back of a horse.
He stopped me before I could make my way over to the station door.
"I gotta," he said gruffly. He raised his hand, his index finger looped through a pair of old-style handcuffs. They looked to be practically antiques, but of course, machinery with circuits and wires didn't work so well on the Red Planet.

Some more Yuri Cowgirls, as Evie begins her investigations into the dead (and probably corrupt) Sheriff. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
That room was supposed to be a smoking room or atelier of some sort, at least that was what it had been built for. But Clement preferred to sit up there with some booze and a telescope and snoop. It was said nothing happened in this town that Juda Clement didn't have some whiff of.
I never knew how true that was, especially back when he was Sheriff.
Even then, for all I hated him, I couldn't see how he'd have the time to sit up there and watch the whole town while also supposedly being Sheriff. Oh, I'm not suggesting he was doing his job. But he was certainly going about schmoozing up the voters in the same way Sheriff Tweedy did today.
Half the job of Sheriff was politics, anyway. So very little of it was actual police work. That's what the deputies were for. I hated that. How can you claim to lead a force you barely participate in. It's not how I'd do it, but I also had no intentions of running for Sheriff any time soon. I barely wanted to be a Deputy, but I had a life to save: my own.

Another Yuri Cowgirl snip. Fun fact that will probably surprise absolutely no one who’s ever owned a horse, Buck is based on a real Clyde I once knew. Sweet, but a bastard sometimes. And we loved him anyway. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
People see me, and they immediately wave. Despite what had just happened to my wife—no doubt she'd been through here before me—and despite everyone probably talking about it beneath their breath, I'm still the town doctor, and the people smile and wave when they see me. Some friendlier than others; most were just polite nodes, hat tips, waves, but I recognized friendly faces and allies in the crowd. Those would help me if I really needed it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to collect. I hated having transactional relationships with my patients.
They came to me to get better, and they put their lives in my hands. In turn, the least I could do wasn't leverage that for a favour. I swore and oath to help people, to heal the sick, regardless of opinion, politics, or any other stupid human label. If they were sick and I could help, I would help. It was a line I knew Evie didn't understand, and most days barely respected. She'd be pushing me to use them if it came down to it, but she knew I'd refuse and why.
The roads were quieter today, and I made it to the Sheriff's office off
the main drag pretty quickly. I made sure to park Buck facing the water trough. I could unhitch him for a bit, but I wasn't hoping to be long and I didn't feel like fighting with him to get him rehitched after. Buck was sweet but he was an ornery bastard. I give a pat and a scratch between the ears and sneak him one of Evie's peanut butter cookies that I kept on me just for him—he accepted the sacrificial offering and gave me a wuffle in response. I took that to mean he'd behave. If he didn't bite a child this time, I'd be happy.
I take one last breath and enter the Sheriff's office. The bell rings and
then rings again as I close the door behind me. I look around and can't see anyone—but I can hear people conversing in another room. The room where I know the jail cells are.

As the memories of the night before come back to Evie, she’s still pretty much mostly sure she didn’t commit murder. Probably. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
When he says that, the memories start to come back. They're murky, and fuzzy, like my tongue when I woke up this morning. I didn't remember much of last night when I woke up, only that I woke up in the spare room—Teo's old room—still in my clothes from the night before. My head hurt. As I thought back, pushing through the murk and muck to my memories of the night before, they were still hazy, like looking at them through the lace that clung to the side of a beer glass—which was appropriate considering how hammered I was. I don't remember what I drank last night, but I know I racked up enough of a tab Layla was gonna kill me when collection time came.
Layla... No, I push the thoughts from my mind. I need to focus on my memories. I need to remember last night. I recall... vaguely getting mad. I couldn't say what time. I shouted, I got angry; hands grabbed me, held me back. I was restrained, like bull gone wild. I don't know who I got mad at,
but it might've been the Sheriff. That made sense.
Shit. That wasn't good. I had motive, I had a very public scene, I was very visibly drunk, and I held the potential murder weapon on me when I was arrested. With a single bullet missing too. The empty casing was the first thing I'd noticed when I woke up and strapped on my gun. I'd thought nothing of it at the time but now...

Haven’t had many matching vibes the last few days since the WIP is still early days. Also just been busy. But enjoy another snip from Yuri Cowgirls! #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
I ain't saying I'm not smart. I read plenty. But my upbringing out here on this red ball of dusty was slightly more...rural. My daddy taught me most of what I needed to know before the age of ten, and the schoolhouse in town did the rest till I was sixteen. I spent a semester up at the university on Gallagher Space Station, up in orbit, but it became clear real fast that I didn't fit in with the Spacer kids.
Spacers and Martians weren't meant to mix, as far as they were concerned. They were the pride of the colony; they came up with all the inventions and had all the money, we just grew their food and worked their mines and kept the Raiders from shooting up their businesses and land.

More Yuri Cowgirls. Here we see Evie brought in by the long arm of the law, paraded through the streets as a campaign prop (on the sly!). All for a crime she (probably) didn’t commit. #writesky #writingcommunity #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
Sheriff waved, smiled, and tipped his hat at everyone he passed. Each one of them was a voting constituent, after all, and he was halfway through his fifth consecutive term as Sheriff of Seldom. Election year was still two years out, but the Sheriff didn't run uncontested for nothing. He was a shit Sheriff by reckoning, but he was a damn good politician. Man could schmooze with the best of them. Papa always did say he belonged up on the space station. Well, he'd said out in space, but I took it to mean on the station..
Still, I couldn't help but feel like he was making a spectacle of my arrest. I was just fodder for his next campaign. I wondered how long before campaign signage with 'Keeping the streets clean!' typed next to my mugshot would take to appear.

A quick snip of Layla bailing Evie out of the town jail. She’s an incredibly ethical doctor, but when the cops are crooked sometimes you gotta lean too. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
The Sheriff takes it without counting—he trusts me, and I can see that in how he pockets it without hesitation. I'm not the trouble maker in my relationship. And he's got his annual physical next week, which helps. I
hated thinking like that... but he and I both knew that one word from me on that physical and I could end his career. If he didn't pass that physical he'd be forced to retirebecause there wasn't much else a man of his age could do in town, and I doubted Sheriff Tweedy would want to do anything else. I would never hold his physical hostage to be clear, but Tweedy didn't know that, and it wasn't manipulative not to tell him...right?
I hated thinking like Evie. It made me feel less human.

Ignore the typo. It’s harder to edit from my phone. But yet another Yuri Cowgirls scene, between FMC and the daughter of her mortal enemy. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
"What's he in for?" I ask, hushed like, so as not to wake him.
Annie shrugged. "Brought him in this morning. Found him passed out just outside town. Kind of felt bad for the guy... He always looks so sad." I try not to scoff. Annie wasn't even born when Jon Oakes lost everything he ever loved in a single, terrible stand-off. No doubt her Pa didn't tell her a thing about it either. No wonder, he didn't come out looking like the good guy to most. It was part of why Jon Oakes got off so easy at the trial—even though he himself was part to blame.
So as not to seem rude, I try to say something. "He'd have more reason than most. His life ain't been kind to him, and his choices ain't always been great. Still, I pity him." It was true, I did. I'd lost someone I loved to the Sheriff's Office and the cruelty of Juda Clement and Edmont Tweedy. What a shit stain of a Sheriff's Office.
"No one will ever tell me why..." Annie says. There she goes, pouting
again.
I don't know what she expected from me, but I wasn't gonna be the one to tell her. I don't care how much she pouted, how big her tits were, or how cut she looked pouting like a little lamb. It wasn't my story or my place to say. If her daddy wanted to burn her opinion of him, he could do it himself.
I mosey into my new digs—a simple four by four jail cell. Cot with a
blanket on one side, a toilet and sink on the other. A dirty and cracked mirror completed the look. At least the place wasn't bug infested—far as I could reckon anyway. "Well, it ain't home, but she'll do."

One of the best things my parents did was let me read whatever I wanted. I was in 5th grade when I read a 1,100 page collection of all Sherlock Holmes stories, and at that point, I felt like no book was too advanced for me. I began to read voraciously, and it made me a better person.

Another Yuri Cowgirls snip. Evie’s just made a gamble with her life to solve a murder she didn’t commit, disregarding the fact she’s got a wife and kids at home. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
LAYLA FOLLOWED ME TO QIANG'S, shadowing me wordlessly. Anyone who didn't know Layla might think she'd just smiled and gone along with everything I'd just done. But I knew Layla better than that. When you've been with someone for 26 years, and married for 24, you start to learn a little something about them.
In Layla's case I knew her anger was a quiet thing. Layla did not explode, she did not yell or scream, or rant or swear. I mean, she swore, but not because she was angry. Layla's anger was silent; like a tiger in the grass ready to pounce. The danger was what you didn't see. A ticking time bomb waiting to blow. A slow burn; the kind of fire that burned through the insulation in your walls and choked you to death in your sleep without you even knowing.
I could always tell how mad Layla was by how big the smile on her face was, and how quiet and agreeable she seemed to my fuckery. Right now, Layla was the happiest I'd seen her in weeks, and she hadn't said a word to me since we left the Sheriff's Office.
I was pretty certain Layla would actually smother me in my sleep tonight. One more thing to add to the list of things I had to apologize for.
After a quarter century together, that list starts looking pretty long, for anyone.

A scene between FMC Evie and her middle daughter. I really enjoy their mother-daughter relationship. Ditta is very much a mirror for Evie, for good or bad. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
I turn to get back on Kala, so I can get her out into a paddock and cool her and Coffee down a bit. I expect Ditta to go, but she doesn't. She stands there, staring at me expectantly and I can feel a shiver run down my spine, because those are my eyes staring back at me. My eyes looking at me how I used to look at my parents when I wanted to say something but couldn't get the words out.
"Spit it out, kiddo. Ain't doing no one any good kickin' around in yer
head." Least I can do is make it easy on the kid.
"Ma..."
I don't immediately answer, I let her work through the words.
"You're not gonna hang are you?"
I don't know how to answer that. Because I don't know myself. My faith in my own abilities to solve this case are pretty low right now-but I had more than I did a few hours ago. Lorraine Tweedy might just be my saving grace. But I had a long way to go before I could crack the case. So I lie to the kid; like parents do when they want to protect their kids from the truth. Course eventually they figure it out, and things blow up in your face if you do it too often. I knew that too well. "Nah, kiddo. Everything's gonna be a-okay. Sheriff's giving me a chance to fix this, and I'm gonna fix it."
Ditta's got tears in her eyes by now. "You promise?"
"Promise. You ain't ever known me not to keep my word right?" I immediately correct myself. "I mean, I always fix what I say I'm gonna fix?"
"Long as it isn't in the house," Ditta sniffs, but there's a smile on her
face now at least.
Damn kid was too mouthy for her own good, and I loved her for it.

G'afternoon #TFOTsnip! It's the last sequence of chapters leading to the climax here, where Milly discovers a surprising detail. #writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity
It’s the cellar. The one I fell into in the woods. The door I just ripped open is in the stone box under the fireplace, on the side I didn’t look at. There it is, the open door where Val got me out through.
I guess those bits of crap on the floor wasn’t from rebellious teenagers after all.
“Isn’t this-“ Galilah starts.
“Yeah. The footprints lead up and out,” I say and head towards the open doors to the outside, where it’s now raining. A thin drizzle that carries the promise of far more substantial rainfall to come. I clime up those steps for a second time without first climbing down them, a fact I briefly find amusing, and then we’re all out in the forest at night in the rain. At least the soft ground gives us easy tracks to follow, big huge four toed feet with big claws of their own, and for a second I remember watching Jurassic park as a kid. I was the only one back then who hadn’t been scared or gotten nightmares as a result. These deep footprints remind me of that movie.
They head north, and so do I.

In this snip from Yuri Cowgirls, Evie is arrested for a murder she didn’t commit, and is brought in by the local corrupt sheriff with him she and her family have a…history. #writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity
The bell above the door rings as the door creaks open. Tweedy kicks it shut behind him and it rattles in the frame, ringing the bell again along the way. This first thing I notice is that Delena isn't sitting at the receptionist's desk. Instead, there's a pretty young girl parked there, her muddy feet up on the desk, filing her nails. At a glance she was easily half my age, with curly blonde hair, eyes like a clear sky, and a mile-wide smile. She had a few too many buttons undone on her gingham shirt; no doubt an intentional tactic that drew eyes towards her buxom bosom. It worked, clearly, because I caught myself glancing down quick before her sickly sweet voice brought me to attention.
"Didja catch her?" she asks.
I roll my eyes. What a vapid question, I think to myself. That much
should be obvious to anyone with eyes in their skull.
Tweedy chuckle in a self-satisfied way. "Didn't even put up a fight. I
admit, I owe ya twenty."
I was about to open my mouth and start ripping the receptionist a new one—then she stood up, and I realized I had narrowly just avoided making things worse for myself. The girl stood up, and my attention was drawn from her chest to her hips—not for their shape, but for what she wore on her belt. On her right hip was a holster, with a presumably loaded gun, and on her left hip was a bright and shiny deputy's badge.
This was not the receptionist. This was Annie Tweedy, Sheriff
Tweedy's daughter and a deputy of the Seldom Sheriff's Office.

G'afternoon #TFOTSnip! A meeting between Milly's students and roommate (who's helping her organize the 'class' she's hosting) and it goes a little weird for some reason. #Writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity
Christine and Gen each walk forward to Clara and hold out their hands to her. In response to this, Clara holds out both her hands so she can take their hands into each of hers. They stand there, looking at each other intimately for a second before the two student girls bow their head to Clara in a show of respect, which Clara returns. I’ve never seen her do something like this. She sees me staring, and shoots me a shrug saying ‘I’m just playing along here, no idea what we’re doing’. Then the two girls let go of her hands and step back.
“So nice to see a friend of Miss Milly. This is a lot of paper here, what are you researching? Christine asks while looking around the room.
“I’m… I’m helping Milly do her class work preparations. You can call me her secretary, or study aide or something,” Clara answers the girl.
“Oh, okay,” Genevieve says ash she looks at the papers as well. From here I can see various exercise methods and choke-hold breaking manoeuvers, exactly what I intend to teach them next.
“In fact, I have to confer with her right now. Will you girls wait here for me while I talk to Clara in private?” I ask, and both nod without a word. I head over to the small bedroom, nodding my head in it’s direction for Clara to follow me. She does but looks confused as she follows.

Layla's words ring in my head. Some days you're too much like your dad,
Evenstar.
I hide a sad smile. I used to hate when she called me that. Never understood why; never made sense. Then one day she dropped a brick in my lap—Layla called it a book but I was certain it was actually a foundation stone from an old Earth castle-and told me to read it. Apparently these books were considered ancient literature back on Earth, virtually sacred texts, up there with other mythologies. She compared them to the Iliad and Odyssey, which I knew because of my Yiayia. She would tell me these stories, and other tales from Greek mythology before bed as a child. I always found them fascinating, but I'll admit the Iliad was a bit beyond me. I don't fully remember the details, but I recall it was about some sad man and his tragic boyfriend, and war fought for possession of the most beautiful woman.
I never got it. I always thought the Odyssey was the better tale, personally.
Anyway, Layla said I'd understand why she called me that after reading the books, and if not, I'd at least have a new favourite series by the time I was done. Well, by the time I was done, I had to admit, the books were quite enjoyable. I still read them from time to time, even now, when I get a rare moment to read. But between the two lovers, I'd much prefer to be named after the Ranger, riding around, protecting people; scruffy, sweaty, and dirty. I was already halfway there anyway—just lacking the dangling bits. Wouldn't be so bad to be a king, in secret, either. Maybe then we could finally afford the few extra ranch hands we needed each season. I tried to get Layla to call me Strider after that, but she flat out refused. She persisted with Evenstar.
If you won't take Evenstar, I shall call you Tinúviel, for either way you are the most beautiful woman I have ever met, and I would give up both my left hand and my life for but a brief moment in your arms. Then she planted a kiss upon my brow and traipsed off toward

Here’s another snip from Yuri Cowgirls! Kinda vibing it today though. #writingprompts #writesky #writingcommunity #TFOTSnip
The sardonic tone I used betrayed the pity I felt for Jon Oakes. He and
my dad had been close as kids, and though they weren't as close as adults, my Daddy never forget a friend, nor did he forget a neighbour in need.
There'd been a time I'd called Jon Oakes Uncle Jon. Still hurt sometimes to see him how he was, knowing what he did.
I never told Layla, but I'd been picking up Jon's tab since he'd been
back; for both food and drink, down at Qiang's. He had no money, and whatever he begged with was never enough to cover what he spent. I didn't want him to know it was me, because even crazy and drunk, Jon was proud as ever. A farmer to the bitter end. The money he gave Qiang, Qiang set and aside in a special savings fund for Jon in case he ever needed it, or wanted to turn his life around. Qiang even matched whatever Jon brought in with some funds of his own.
"I'm sorry, Evenstar..." Layla's tone was genuinely apologetic.
Figured. no matter how tough I tried to come across, my wife always
knew when I was hurting, and the Oakes story hurt me more than most.
Especially now that I had my own kids... I could never imagine what would drive a parent to those desperate lengths, and knew that it had to be great indeed. I wave Layla off. "It's history now. Ain't no point dwelling on the past."

Vibing it today! A snip from my current unexpected WIP, still jokingly called Yuri Cowgirls from Mars (actually called A Shot in the Dark). #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writesky #writingcommunity
The bell above the door rings as the door creaks open. Tweedy kicks it shut behind him and it rattles in the frame, ringing the bell again along the way. This first thing I notice is that Delena isn't sitting at the receptionist's desk. Instead, there's a pretty young girl parked there, her muddy feet up on
the desk, filing her nails.
I was about to open my mouth and start ripping the receptionist a
new one—then she stood up, and I realized I had narrowly just avoided making things worse for myself.

So, a bunch of writer friends of mine came together to make our own snippy daily alongside the others on Bluesky, and here it is, plus mine provided snip for the day. Proper Hash usage will happen in future. Please welcome #TFOTSsnip !
“That’d be me! Murchadh Craig Clacher! I’d prefer it if everyone just call me Craig, it’s just easier for everyone!” I’m not entirely sure what his accent is, but it’s definitely there, and I feel like I should know what it is. The name is a big clue.
I hand him his book and I decide to risk a guess. “The name, are you from Scotland?”
“The one and only, from a coastal fishing village I’ll not make any of yea try to pronounce, even though I like seeing people’s confused faces when they try!” His smile widens as he steps aside to make room for the next one in line, which is one of the trio of girls, who make up the front of the line now. The one Irena called Galilah steps forward with the same expression she wore earlier.
“Galilah? Am I remembering correctly?” I ask as I hand her the book, and surprise replaces the hard look.
“Yes, you did. Galilah Dif. Thank you,” she says as she take the book, but refuses to say anything more, then steps aside to reveal the green haired girl. I look more closely as she approaches, nervous and holding her hands up to her chest, not looking me in the eyes.
“Genevieve?” I ask as I hold out her book, and she looks up into my eyes with complete surprise. “I heard that blond woman call you that. Was that your mother?”
She nods and gingerly reaches to take the book from me and says, with some difficulty, “G-Genevieve S-stander!” Then quickly retreats to stand beside Galilah. I look closer as she retreats, and for the life of me I can’t see if that green hair is a dye job, it looks so pristine. But it can’t be natural, can it?

G'morning #WIPSnips! Milly just got done here with doing a *thing* she can't rationally come to terms with due to past trauma, so her mind just skitters past it without looking to hard. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
And for some reason the smell of popcorn is just everywhere.
Once again, a small nagging part of my mind tries to raise the question of how what I’ve just done is even possible. How could I know or do any of this, but I ignore it as I usually do. It’s not actually real, I know. I’m just getting to know the place. There’s no power involved, it’s just a mind palace thing. All perfectly normal and logical, as everything always is.
To distract myself from this old mind-worry, I look around this seating area for something to pull my attention, and I find it. An analogue clock, and the arms show it to be a quarter to one. Just about lunchtime, and it’s about this time that Irena emerges from her office to take lunch as well, which means she’ll be coming through that door any minute now. Seeing me sitting right here might get very awkward to explain, so I stand up and make my way down the hallway and towards the kitchen, because I’m absolutely starving. Should have picked up something at Clara’s, now I have a really big, grumbling hole that needs filling.

“Ah, they’ve arrived! Just in time!. Now students, you will be divided down the middle with regards to accommodation. Girls will climb the right, my right, stairs and find the right hallway, where your rooms will be. Boys will do the same up my left. There are a few basement rooms for any of you that desire such a room instead.” I’m left wondering who’d really prefer a room in a basement, but I see two of the kids visibly relax at the suggestion. One is Goran and the other is, I think, a girl, but is more accurately just a nearly obscuring waterfall of straight black hair almost down to the floor, with one narrow slit revealing one side of a very pale face and a green eye.

I push out against the hardness in front of me. It resists, but only for a few moments. Cracking and crunching noises fill my senses where only the beats were. I push harder. It fights me, but i cannot stop.
Cracks appear in front of me and… whatever it is i’m in is breached. Light and air flood over me and i gasp, drawing in lungfuls of air to sate the burning.
Thu-dump! Thu-dump!
My heart calms now that i have air, but it still beats rapidly. I still have to get out, i am in danger here! Get out and get up!
How do i know all this?
I push again, harder now that i’m breathing again. The cracks widen… and then i’m falling forward out of a large tear. My whole world tumbles, and then i’m half laying on a cold, rough, dirty floor, half hanging out of my vacated prison. I draw in another breath and start coughing, expelling dark liquid out of my lungs, but i am breathing fully and properly now.
