I made a 250 frame animation that got corrupted while I was trying to save it. I'll attempt to recreate it but in the meantime here's this, so I can show something before the month ends, for #monthlypixels The prompt really inspired me and I had lots of fun coming up with these ideas #pixelart #1bit

Next in the Gem Dragon illustrations I did for Dungeons & Dragons The Book of Dragons is my favorite. You may have noticed the somewhat controversial design feature but instead of cowardly ‘fixing’ it, I leaned all the way in. This is dragon 2 of 5

Topaz dragon illustration design sheet I painted. I know the wings are going to take some adjusting to so bear these words in mind: it also has floating crystals; it’s a magic man.

my favorite color palette this year 💙

collage of two digital paintings.

Image on the left: Digital painting of a merman with rich, royal blue skin and fins. His tail is encrusted with a porcelain armor of sorts, with ornate carvings and patterns on it, almost similar to a ceramic vase. He is donning a pair of concrete bracelets, and a helmet in the same texture as his tail, with a sapphire centerpiece. His hair is flowing in the water, and he is playing a 5 string porcelain vase.

Image on the right: Digital painting of an elegant merman. There is a glow of royal blue coming out of a cavity in middle of his upper torso in the middle that extends to his abdomen, and out of two columns of holes in his bottom portion. His tail seems to be a hollow flesh and the blue magic extends out to form his fish tail. There is a royal blue sword on top of the character; the sword is slim and sharp, and the blade is sculpted to have an impaled fish on its end.

a collage of two digital paintings.

Image on the left: a man kissing a merman on the cheek and they are surrounded by fish. The illustration is almost abstract, with a color palette of vibrant and dark blues, and pale grays.

Image on the right: Digital painting of a merfolk creature, perched on top of a pillar. The creature has two pairs of fins protruding out of his head, webbed hands that have sharp claws, and a long fish tail coming out his lower back. He is displaying his backside, and there is a row of spiked fins that run from his nape to his fish tail. He is looking over his shoulder, and his eyes are blaring red. There are ruins in the background of the illustration.

Digital painting of a warrior and his sea monster companion.

The warrior has spiky, white armor created from bones of fish and sea creatures, and there are elegant patterns engraved on them. In the crevices of the armor, his flesh can be seen, and it is almost iridescent blue. He is holding up a blade with an intricate skull hilt.

Behind him is a colossal skeleton of a fish, but with long, serpentine spine. It appears to be sentient.

collage of two digital paintings.

image on the left: Digital painting of a centaur with unicorn horn on his forehead, and big butterfly wings. He has elegant hair and tail that is flowing in the wind.

Image on the right: Digital painting of a fairy with giant blue morpho butterfly wings and a faint halo, holding a lantern that attracts butterflies.

The four outer images include wrinkled and jeweled hands holding up a goblet overflowing with oil, a shadowed castle with smoke coming out of the towers, meant to invoke a refinery. A new translation was recently published of a seminal manga/comics studies essay in 1995 that documents and explains manga iconography with 120 examples. It's so exciting to see a precursor of what I'm doing rn with the Comics Devices Library www.japanesestudies.org.uk/ejcjs/vol24/...

Abstract: In the following translation of an important essay from seminal Manga Studies work How to Read Manga (Manga no yomikata, 1995), manga creator and editor Takekuma Kentarō examines the full range of manga iconography (manpu) and visual effects in this sweeping survey of over 120 concrete samples. He calls these “shape metaphors” (keiyu) and classifies them into two main branches: stand-alone icons and picture-dependent metaphorical effects. If a giant sweat mark has been drawn on the back of a character’s head, one can tell that he is in a panic just from seeing that back figure even though this image is unrealistic. This is a type of visual metaphor and the profundity of such expressions are distinct to comic books. Takekuma’s “shape metaphors” have such refined functions that express the situation or the state of mind of a character, often efficiently and even humorously. Through their use, comic book artists have been able to liberate their stories from the bare bones of plot and create additional layers of psychology and mood all through these seemingly nonsensical and excessive graphic marks. For the first time, this translation presents in English the writings of this seminal manga artist, humorist, critic, and scholar and provides an encyclopedic-like guide to some of manga’s most interesting and irrepressible visual tropes.

A set of expressive lines used in manga to denote motion and feeling.
