5 years ago today, my wife and I were driving around in the hills in Vermont while waiting on some photography for our launch collection in the new brand (Montgomery-Ramsay). It was perfect weather, and just the right time of year.

Vertigo has discovered that there are cats outside of his room, and he DESPERATELY wants to meet them. Big Tiger came up to begin the detente, and Vertigo is hooked. He's now sitting at the cat gate, crying out for friends.

10 years ago today, @sallliss.bsky.social and I arrived in Venice to have a redo of our previous year's trip, where I wound up hospitalised on our first day, ruining Sarah's first ever trip to Europe. The redo trip was really nice. I miss those days. My dad was still getting around and healthy.
A selfie of me and Sarah from San Giorgio, with the camera looking toward San Marco across the water. It's sunset.

There was a time when old Uncle Joe was SO scared to come into the house and eat while I was in the room (unmoving), that he had to be escorted and coaxed by Little Tiger, who showed him it was safe. This morning, Joe blocked my path and then hissed at me because I wasn't petting him...

Head's up for US shippers. USPS Ground Advantage is changing its 'expected' delivery times from 2-5 days to 10+ days. It will travel road only, so do not use this for temp-sensitive items. Priority mail to the non-contiguous US will be 2-6 days, but expect the high end.

Kittens. Vertigo spent the morning knocking things over in his room. Knocked over a mirror and made a loud clash (and also blocked the door from opening). Knocked stuff off shelves. Exploring his space and getting more comfortable. It's actually a good sign. But loud at 4am. :)

There is a kitty on a cloud... She likes to go there in her sleep. Nobody shout or talk too loud. Not while the kitty's on her cloud.

October has arrived! Absolutely the best time to putter about in the North Georgia mountains. Lots of festivals and fun. Apple houses are open all over. Pumpkin patches and corn mazes. But steer clear of Helen, GA! It's Octoberfest and traffic is AWFUL. It's the best of times and the wurst of times.

Okay. Vertigo is done with surgery and in recovery. Will pick up in a couple of hours. Vertigo is a boy. 3.6 lbs (~1.6 kg). Estimates are about 3-4 months old. Negative for FeLV and FIV, so he'll be allowed in gen pop.

Vertigo is home. Made a beeline for mom (who's in the cubby just beneath him). Meowed like mad when he realised she was there. And has now settled down to chill. She's not sure who he is yet, but he's tiny, so she's adopted a relaxed posture now and is calm.

Okay. Vertigo is in the hands of the clinic now. So I fret. And fret. And fret. And did I mention fretting? I know these things are utterly routine. But there's ALWAYS a risk, even with routine surgery. So I shan't be able to relax until the little kid's back here and safe.

Trap set for the kitten. We’ll see if he comes back and, if so, if he goes into the trap. And then... well. We'll burn that bridge when we come to it.

I have literally no idea what this random facebook ad is saying. I'mma assume they're selling ungraduated, white violin bodies. But... I don't actually know. Piano embryos??
A picture of stacks of violins and celli, none with necks attached. The text is from "Wholesale Violins & Bows for repair/restoration (Dealer's Page)" on Facebook. The ad copy says, "Leave the time to the soul of the voice, and leave the hassle to the professional us. Professionally customized refined piano embryos to accurately reserve the acoustic tuning thickness For you. Without heavy blanking and sharpening, you can fully devote yourself to the shaping and carving of t He core tone - even simplify the process, and achieve your unique violin sound."

All our cats are feral. In general, they almost never vocalise to either me or my wife. Once in a while to each other, but rarely. And they have somewhat understandable behaviours. Our abandoned STRAY on the other hand is equally loud to us both. But we never know what she wants.

The entire bottom shelf in our freezer has been encased in 12" of solid ice for a good while now. We've been resisting the need to defrost the thing for a while because it's, like, work (and we've a lot of frozen stuff). And f that. But today, we chipped it all out with hammers and picks.
A large stainless steel sink full of ice and an Imperial pint of shandy cooling off, so I can celebrate later.

My boys...
Three orange cats stare out some open windows. Two in cat baskets, and one stretching up from the floor next to a cat basket. Outside the windows is lush and green, and there's likely a squirrel or chipmunk on the forest floor being eyed murderously by the kitties.

We transferred Esme from her recuperation kennel to her new room yesterday. Her new room is Hallow's old room (which was Junior and Niall's old room). Hallow's a bit less than thrilled, but she has the rest of the house, and Esme needs her own space. Esme was... not an easy move. Took over an hour.

This little dude (my brother) turns 55 today. He's ancient. Happy Birthday, Dylan!
A photo of a young boy in a 'Scotland' shirt, staring at a barnyard animal birthday cake, upon which is written 'Happy Birthday.' There are crisps on plates around the table, and the boy and a couple of visible guests are all wearing hats. The boy's paper hat is a golden crown. The image was taken in the 1970s, and definitely has that 70s feel to it.

Made this little gold maple leaf pendant today in honour of the first day of Autumn. Any excuse to saw some metal! The copper leaves at the bottom were made some years ago for hammered copper napkin rings. Someday, I'll make more of those if someone orders them.

Ahhh... another few hundred in tariffs plus another $50 in fees. UPS' fees for assessing tariffs are ridiculous. There's the brokerage fee. There's the collection fee. There's the line-item charge per item in the shipment. There's the digital payment fee. Basically a lot of fee fees.

A selection of 10 fancy desserts. There's a raspberry, a chocolate monstrosity of some kind, a coconut, a peach, a lemon drop (indigo), a tiramisu, another super chocolatey thing, a hazelnut chocolate thing, a coffee torte thing, and a pistachio.

Okay. Esme's transferred back from luxury accommodations to the trap for her TNR appt. She is still a serious ball of anger. Some of that may settle in a month or so post-procedure. But she's spicy. Who wants a challenge? I think Esme will settle into being a lovely girl, but it will take TIME.

This tends to be what I see when I see people's flyers on FB these days... a sea of sameness. Everyone over there is letting AI make all their design decisions. The stores that AREN'T actually stand out as creative and unique. Everyone else is just a blur of boring, identical schlock.
A collage of advertisements pulled from Facebook showing a zillion identical-looking adverts, all made by AI.

They've successfully cut out the cable provider middlemen, and can now make more money than the Disney Channel ever did... We dropped them when they went from $60/year to $120/year in our 2nd year, and, honestly, haven't missed it. I suspect this is the way they'll all go soon.

My baby (Big Tiger). He doesn't actually know his name IS Big Tiger. He's only responded to 'Baby Boy' since he was a kitten. I could call him from the deck, and he'd come from a couple of houses over in a flash. He sometimes still comes when I call. You know. If he's not busy with cat stuff.
A golden-eyed orange cat lies in a cat basket, staring in the general direction of the camera. A sleepy orange cat lies curled up in a cat tree basket that is clearly too small for him. Behind him, the sun shines in the garden where he once ran and played. He's listening to the sounds of the outdoors.

The number of jewellers I see in business that do NOT specify any terms of sale is bizarre to me. Like... I'll constantly see people in industry groups asking what to do in the case of a customer wanting a refund. Or how to handle deposits. Etc. And this is AFTER they've made sales.
