A more ethically substantive expression of mutuality would require a (progressively revised) informal norm governed social context, which has all but disappeared — leaving only formal rules that bypass deep moral deliberation (Taylor’s ‘Strong Evaluation’). www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Consent is a legalistic not moral concept that sets the bar at a formal, verbal agreement. Moreover, it places the ‘gate-keeping’ onus on the woman (an ostensibly liberal concept into which reactionary assumptions are baked). To consent is to concede, to acquiesce, to grant access..

Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 1h
This is to infer nothing of what those norms should be, nor that we should not be critical of them, but only to point out for example that no bureaucratic authority instructs us to queue, we just queue. Take sexual ‘consent’, which is taken to be synonymous with enthusiastic mutuality but is not..

One idea of more sophisticated conservative thinkers (if you want to call someone like Charles Taylor a conservative) that I have some time for is the more informal ethical norms are eroded in atomised market societies the more bureaucratic regulation & surveillance has to operate in its place.

Samson And Delilah www.wikiart.org/en/rembrandt/samson…
This artwork, often attributed to Rembrandt, depicts the dramatic biblical scene of Samson and Delilah, capturing the moment when Delilah deceitfully cuts Samson's hair, robbing him of his strength. The use of chiaroscuro highlights the tension and emotion in the characters, a hallmark of Rembrandt's masterful use of light and shadow.

In other words, there is the danger of a class interest in people being sick. Or you might be a ‘Homelessness Support Officer.” Great. Not saying that’s a bad thing. But if there are no homeless people you no longer have a job. This is a problem.

Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 5h
I don’t doubt that there are lots of such caring people. But there is a danger of parasitism. There’s no doubt that if everyone was housed and had secure meaningful employment mental distress would be much reduced, yes? That could mean as a MH expert you are out of a job…

..was bloody awful; loads of people dying from horrendous diseases. But it’s pretty hard to imagine an OCD germaphobe serf compulsively washing their hands, to whom an analyst could say “Zis neurotic compulsion is an unconscious manifestation of your repressed unconscious fears of sex and death.”

Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 6h
I’m not saying they shouldn’t have access to mental health treatment of course. The danger as I say is purely viewing the person as the problem to the exclusion of addressing what is seriously exacerbating or even causing their distress (the economic context)

Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 6h
In a way, psychoanalysis has always been a thing of bourgeois modernity. Hard to imagine a neurotic in the modern sense medieval peasant. They would have grown up seeing dead bodies, urinating and defecating publicly, their parents having sex feet away. And it’s good all that is gone because it..

Of course, I’m just saying that we can feel we are doing something good by diagnosing them with conditions while not addressing their material deprivations rooted in political economy…
100
Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 6h
Absolutely, and I’m obviously not opposed to that. But it can be gotten back to front. That is, the diagnosis can be used to explain a suffering which has a material cause. Instead of relieving suffering by housing people, we can diagnose them as mentally ill, making therapists rich.
100
Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 6h
Surely true, but in general to access therapy one needs money. Plus, when you don’t have shelter or enough to eat a neurodevelopmental or mental health diagnosis will probably not be a priority.

Once, under social democracy, the homeless man could rise up to become virtually middle-class. Now he can’t, and now the Zoomer / Alpha graduate can no longer see a route to the middle-class security her parents and grandparents enjoyed, haunted by the fear she might one day slide down to join him.

Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 6h
One could cynically say typical TikTok Zoomer girl with Complex PTSD, ADHD and autism is not suffering like the man I’ve just had to give £10 to get home. But maybe she is still genuinely suffering, her place in the world and path into meaningful adulthood no longer assured..4/

The lower rungs of the PMC (Professional Managerial Class) are being precariatised, even semi-proletarianised. For many culturally middle-class young people a degree is no longer an initiatory route into a life cycle of career development and home ownership underwritten by the social contract..3/

Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 7h
There is definitely something to this, which goes right back to the neurasthenic rich of the 19th century. But I feel she maybe overstates the case to the point of denying a very real bourgeois angst at a moment when middle-class status is precarious and downward mobility an ever-present fear..2/
100
Sal 🇵🇸🇺🇦 @sal46.bsky.social · 7h
It’s a great piece. I’ve been engaging with Catherine Liu’s critique of hyper-diagnosticism as bourgeois (basically middle-class people launder their individual trauma as an identity to be managed via costly therapy while systemic working-class exploitation is obscured)…1/

What I’m saying is ‘the person themselves’ is becoming less a concern of mental health practitioners as liberal humanism fades from the social sciences. Neurology is replacing psychology, ‘wellbeing’ happiness.
