I didn't realize PE-owned insurance companies could be hollowed out well more than the cost of purchase. So who pays (directly) for today's 2T+ big-shed build out once they goes under? A good part of it will be the insurance companies' counterparties: policyholders, bondholders, pension funds.

Such a fun peak into the machinations behind insurance company finance, and how it is rapidly changing. Yes AI is involved, and no, you’re probably not going to like the implications. Best to know anyway. This could be the same kind of surprise as credit default swaps, and just as damaging.

Have to reshare this every time I see it. Raymond Chandler mocking science fiction in 1953 and sounding cool as hell. He should have written some space stories.
Did you ever read what they call Science Fiction? It’s a scream. It is written like this:

“I checked out with K19 on Aldabaran III, and stepped out through the crummalite hatch on my 22 Model Sirus Hardtop. I cocked the timejector in secondary and waded through the bright blue manda grass. My breath froze into pink pretzels. I flicked on the heat bars and the Brylls ran swiftly on five legs using their other two to send out crylon vibrations. The pressure was almost unbearable, but I caught the range on my wrist computer through the transparent cysicites. I pressed the trigger. The thin violet glow was icecold against the rust-colored mountains. The Brylls shrank to half an inch long and I worked fast stepping on them with the poltex. But it wasn’t enough. The sudden brightness swung me around and the Fourth Moon had already risen. I had exactly four seconds to hot up the disintegrator and Google⁵ had told me it wasn’t enough. He was right.”

They pay brisk money for this crap?

Same argument always, and always wrong. The private sector is *never* in a better position to buy and operate not-for-profit assets because its cost of capital and, therefore, required returns are always—always—higher than the state's. Which means higher user costs and/or lower service quality.
"Britain has only a handful of for-profit universities and Senhaji said the scepticism towards the model in the sector was “a hurdle to overcome” in much of Europe. But he argued that private capital was better placed to invest than a financially stretched public sector."
