How does a speech plan become fluent movement? In Nature Human Behaviour, led by Kumar Duraivel: Intracranial recordings reveal how hierarchical speech plans become continuous motor sequences across planning, articulation, and monitoring networks. doi.org/10.1038/s415... 1/5

Distinct neural processes link speech planning and execution - Nature Human Behaviour
Direct recordings from the human brain reveal a hierarchy in planning to speak, with neural activity organizing whole syllables before the individual sounds that compose them are sequenced.

New paper in #ScienceAdvances! 10 ECoG patients performed 3 language production tasks: word, word list, and sentence production. We found surprising dissociations between how active cortical sites were and whether they encoded linguistic information: 🧵 [1/9] doi.org/10.1126/scia... @science.org

Hybrid spatial organization and evidence for magnitude-independent neural coding of linguistic information during sentence production
Brain recordings during speech reveal complex linguistic information throughout cortex, independent of neural activity levels.

This is the first study revealing ASMs affect seizure network and healthy networks differently with high spatial and temporal resolution that has implications on understanding how seizures are controlled and how cognitive side effects occur.
010
Serdar Akkol, MD PhD @sakkol.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
We found that ASMs preferentially modulated excitability within epileptic network, with the highest rates of significant CCEP amplitude changes observed for seizure network. We also found that the RMS based connectivity and functional connectivity were altered more often outside of seizure network.
100
Serdar Akkol, MD PhD @sakkol.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
We used these unique situation to compare effective connectivity. We also used resting state recordings from a set of overlapping five patients to understand the functional connectivity changes on vs off ASMs.
100
Serdar Akkol, MD PhD @sakkol.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
As part of ongoing projects, patients with intracranial depth electrodes had single pulse electrical stimulations to record cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) while on ASMs. 5 patients did not have typical seizures, thus clinical team recorded another session to induce seizures off of ASMs.

Happy to share my latest research on how anti-seizure medications affects effective and functional connectivity measured with intracranial EEG #ieeg. My first research article at UAB with Dr. Benjamin Cox and Dr. Rachel J Smith @uabneuro.bsky.social doi.org/10.1002/brb3...
Graphical abstract summarizing the article: ASMs altered the effective connectivity within the seizure network more than within non-involved regions, whereas functional connectivity was altered more often within non-involved regions.

Safety and feasibility of using epicranial electrodes and bolts as electrical stimulation contacts were shown with no side effects or subjective perception. Additionally, this new electrical stimulation method was used in a speech-in-noise task to improve perception.

Accuracy in the task improved in 5 of 6 sessions while not reaching significance across sessions possibly limited due to the limited number of sessions and trials (p=0.087 and 0.068 for 50 ms and 200 ms delay, linear mixed-effects model)

They monaurally listened matrix sentence speech-in-noise task in 3 conditions: no-stimulation, 50 ms, or 200 ms stimulation lag relative to sentence onset. Stim was 100 Hz, biphasic, amplitude-balanced, square-wave pulses where the amplitude (1-6 mA) was modulated by the ongoing speech envelope.
