So incredibly proud of @mirandayaver.bsky.social and her new book on the true - and very painful - impact of health insurance coverage denials. Looks like it will be a staple in my health policy class for sure.

One of the many experiences I encountered in writing my forthcoming book was that as soon as patients began responding to higher-level mental health care, insurers said it wasn’t medically necessary so denied it. I wrote this based on my JHPPL article on inequitable administrative burdens of appealing coverage denials, incorporating a new interview I did with a doc who reviews claims for a major insurer and who said, "We’re told denying things is OK because people can appeal" www.statnews.com/2025/01/23/h...

I wrote a piece summarizing a few of the things Trump's pick to lead the NIH, Dr. Bhattacharya, got catastrophically wrong — especially in 2020. I’ve criticized public authorities, including for nonsensical and excessive measures (closing parks and beaches?). But let’s not rewrite history either.

The language of crisis is 💯 political. But it is easy and flashy. Public health is not political. But it requires an ability to parse information, accept uncertainty, and fundamentally, to care about each other. Things that apparently we are tired of. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/21/o...

This is important. Amidst all the panic about nominees, is the real question: “How is [insert unqualified individual] actually going to ruin our lives?” This is one of those very real ways. Change vaccine approval committee -> insurers to stop covering them -> manufacturers stop making them.

I wonder if it’s not so much that the public can’t handle nuance but that they don’t actually want it. We are in a 280-character soundbite world. It’s hard for nuance to fit in it.

This ridiculous obsession with fluoride in the water (which at worst, causes white spots on teeth), when the US still cannot guarantee lead-free drinking water, safe sanitation systems, or even regular access to water with ongoing droughts (and climate change deniers), is mind-boggling.
