Tonight’s moonrise over Seattle was filtered through layers of smoke and haze, giving the moon that deep orange glow as it climbed behind the Space Needle. The clouds drifting across it made the whole scene feel especially dramatic Sunday night.

Once thought to be little green men (a reference to LGM 1, the first pulsar ever discovered), pulsars can actually do way more for us than simply be some cool space object we observe. In fact, astronomers like Sofia Sheikh use pulsars to measure distance in space and more! buff.ly/tmeFWKt 🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬

#PPOD: Over the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, winds can whip around the globe relatively unimpeded by land. Intrepid sailors termed these southern latitudes the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties, and Screaming Sixties on account of the strong prevailing winds. 🧪
A sea of white clouds covers this picture, taken by Landsat 8 from Earth orbit. In the bottom left corner is an island covered in snow and labeled Peter I Island. The winds driving the clouds are disrupted by the island, and a chain of four vortexes progresses to the upper right corner.
