Why live with your parents? Golden eagles 𝘤𝘢𝘯 be independent long before they actually 𝘢𝘳𝘦. We tracked juvenile eagle flight in high detail and found that skill didn’t predict when they left home. So what does? 🧵 📝 doi.org/10.1098/rsos.251574 @enourani.bsky.social @safilab.bsky.social

Removing outliers is one of the first things to do when analysing movement data. With porting the remaining move functions to move2 in move2utils package, I also wrote some functions to address the GPS outlier problem. The preprint is out and you can find it here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

We have finally ported the last remaining functions from move to the move2 package and while doing so we also started move2universe to accommodate the future additions to the R-package family designed to work with movebank. Move2Utils: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Stay tuned

Some kids are always on the move – others prefer a good book. We show that early-life behaviour in golden eagles 🦅 cascades across life stages: more active nestlings fledge earlier, explore more, and disperse sooner. tinyurl.com/3sb8jnsz @vogelwarte.bsky.social @safilab.bsky.social #ornithology

Matthias longer story on how ravens "know" when to be where.

Animal-Environment Interactions Lab @safilab.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
You know those people who magically appear whenever there’s free food? Ravens do that too – but in Yellowstone, it’s not luck and not because they trail wolves. Instead, they remember where and when kills happen, navigating a mental map of the “landscape of death". www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Ravens anticipate wolf kill sites across broad scales
Scavengers generally rely on patchily distributed, unpredictable carrion. A long-standing hypothesis suggests scavenging ravens reliably locate such food by directly following large carnivores to thei...

There is something I increasingly wonder about: Should wildlife biologists continue posting pictures of themselves holding wild animals into a camera? I don't mean those pictures showing us at work, documenting what we do. I mean: a smiling someone in portrait mode with an animal in hand.

I am trying to find 2 reviewers for a paper on camera traps and predator-prey interactions. 16 invitations sent, 6 declined, the rest are ghosting me, and we're 60 days into submission. Is it that Peer community in Ecology is asking to review? We might be deserving the mess we find ourselves in.
