Thanks to the excellent work of Corinna (PhD student) and Julia (technician) we currently have a huge colony of Vanessa cardui caterpillars (Distelfalter) and a perfect set of #GarlicMustard plants for our upcoming feeding trials comparing tastiness of 80 worldwide populations. There is nowhere else in the world (that I am aware of) where phenology has been recorded as regularly as in Kyoto, Japan. Records here of peak cherry blossom bloom go back to the year 812. Those blooms have been getting earlier in recent years due to climate change and urban heat island effects.

Part of a litter sample from one 1m2 plot (Harvard Forest, plot 100S, Macrosystems transect, 2013). These mites represent a "mesofauna" that is as daunting as it is fantabulous. It takes a certain blend of self-confidence and derangement to study the ecology of oribatid mites.
