capturing new photos has gone back to being the bottleneck, which is actually not that bad. takes maybe 3-4 minutes on average to scan a new beer can. everything else is just enter a few major details like brewery and beer name, fill in some additional brewery info its new to the catalog, etc

small catalog browser update so I can see at a glance what has been developed already and what hasn't yet UI could use a lot more polish, obviously. it works for me right now and that's the important part because I'm the only user (and probably ever will be)

a sample of labels from Fast Fashion, a brewery I discovered while living in Japan which is based in Seattle. another favorite of mine, Matt crafts some incredible IPAs this morning I ported the Typescript alignment pipeline to Rust and it was easily a 60x speedup! previews are near instant now

some more sample label unwraps I've got over a dozen more beers from Wayfinder! one of my favorite breweries in PDX lately. they've got some great branding on top of some uniquely tasty brews!

to get better consistency in placement of my cans before I photograph them, I had claude go and design a base plate for my turntable to hold cans in place! now I just need to go and give it a few coats of white paint so that I can more easily remove it from the photos in post-processing

it's nice to see Cloudflare slowly start to pick up some of these ideas from ATProto! glad you're paving the way on this with EmDash one place I wish Cloudflare had taken a page out of ATProto's book, however, was with Wallet, where it should have domains-as-handles rather than reservations!

(btw, Kura sushi is the one famous for the plate return slots in the table, so there's even less to buss)

Drake @saeris.gg · 29/09/2026
it's still all order-by-tablet and the only staff interactions you have are seating and bussing your table when you leave, but of course there's gratuity anyways cuz fuck you that's why I hate it here

Drake @saeris.gg · 29/09/2026
similarly Kura Sushi is *not worth* here in the US typically Kura, Sushiro, or Hama Sushi (all conveyor belt chains famous for near zero staff interaction) sell plates for like, ¥200 (~$1.50) on average for two pieces of nigiri the one here in Beaverton is around $4.15 per plate 😭

Drake @saeris.gg · 29/09/2026
when I was living there in 2025, I could pay the tab for a night out with 7 of my classmates for 2 hours of all we could eat and drink and the bill would be like... $70 total with these US prices, the amount of menu items I'd usually order just for myself would come up to around $70 😭
100
Drake @saeris.gg · 29/09/2026
for reference, all standard menu items at toriki in Japan are presently ¥410 (tax included), which is about $2.70 per menu item (including most alcohol) which even by toriki's Japan standards is an all-time-high in the past couple of years

I just want to have access to good, cheap yakitori in the US apparently that is too much to ask for

Drake @saeris.gg · 29/09/2026
learned torikizoku made it to the US and at first I was excited but then I saw that skewers are all $8 each and now I am sad again

in about a day's work I've gone from zero to a nearly perfect capture it's beautiful! 🤩

or you could just be like me and every day is a work day and all the days just blend together until I don't know what day of the week it is anymore because all there is is just building stuff, eating and sleeping like a madman hoping the cycle eventually breaks no I'm not slowly going insane why wou

And yet they’ll still have the gall to turn away candidates with a decade or more of experience because they’ve been unemployed due to AI for too long.

been using Vite+ for months now and I use it in every project. I wouldn’t even consider a different toolchain at this point, it’s just that good!

Drake @saeris.gg · 28/09/2026
added trim and horizontal offset on the label framing, not bad for a day's work stitching could still be a bit better, there's still ghosting going on, but tomorrow I'll have a better lighting setup so I can maybe get it resolved with more frames splatting and 3D projection are next up

and the capture app is built on Tauri, with a React Aria + Dialkit UI, leveraging the Sony SDK to communicate and control my camera somehow Claude figured out how to automatically stitch all the captures together; that one is way outside my wheelhouse

Drake @saeris.gg · 28/09/2026
the Genie doesn't have official Windows drivers, btw. Claude reverse-engineered the Android app to build a Bluetooth LE driver for it. it's now a typescript package that can drive the device over the Web Bluetooth API, which is pretty rad tbh

Drake @saeris.gg · 28/09/2026
still emotionally devastated but hey, I built this totally bespoke capture app today it drives my Syrp Genie Mini (a discontinued and unsupported product) and my Sony A7C to automate 360-degree captures for my beer can collection and processes them into a single unwrapped texture so that's cool

what makes this especially hard is for years I've worked from home and am essentially nocturnal. since I've been mostly unemployed these last 4 years, literally all I do is spend my time locked away in my office working on projects and applying for jobs Ary was my constant companion through it all

Drake @saeris.gg · 25/09/2026
yesterday I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Ary, the sweetest little angel who ever lived he was my best friend for 14 years and helped me through all the hardest times of my life I’ll always love you with all my heart and soul, kitty boy

I mean you can bypass it usually with the right flag on a per-package basis, but it's kind of a pain in the ass to work with, especially with LLMs

yay wasted an afternoon trying to develop for Amazon's Vega OS, which specifically prevents using a Fire Stick as a digital signage client they want you to pay 5x as much for a dedicated signage stick. I'd rather tell clients to buy a raspberry pi instead.

I know it’s not the tool you’re looking for, but it sounds like the UX you want is something like Figma Buzz. As far as the multiplayer editing, multiple platform targets and csv support goes that is.

I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Nobody pays for open source. We can force them to. | Seldo.com
Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

Excited that TypeScript will finally support module types based on import attributes! Bundlers and frameworks can now provide accurate types for custom imports:

ideally something that if a power user wants to splinter off and manage their own PDS, they aren't "vendor locked" to you (and hopefully the service makes doing so easy)
