small catalog browser update so I can see at a glance what has been developed already and what hasn't yet UI could use a lot more polish, obviously. it works for me right now and that's the important part because I'm the only user (and probably ever will be)

a sample of labels from Fast Fashion, a brewery I discovered while living in Japan which is based in Seattle. another favorite of mine, Matt crafts some incredible IPAs this morning I ported the Typescript alignment pipeline to Rust and it was easily a 60x speedup! previews are near instant now

some more sample label unwraps I've got over a dozen more beers from Wayfinder! one of my favorite breweries in PDX lately. they've got some great branding on top of some uniquely tasty brews!

to get better consistency in placement of my cans before I photograph them, I had claude go and design a base plate for my turntable to hold cans in place! now I just need to go and give it a few coats of white paint so that I can more easily remove it from the photos in post-processing

in about a day's work I've gone from zero to a nearly perfect capture it's beautiful! 🤩

added trim and horizontal offset on the label framing, not bad for a day's work stitching could still be a bit better, there's still ghosting going on, but tomorrow I'll have a better lighting setup so I can maybe get it resolved with more frames splatting and 3D projection are next up

and the capture app is built on Tauri, with a React Aria + Dialkit UI, leveraging the Sony SDK to communicate and control my camera somehow Claude figured out how to automatically stitch all the captures together; that one is way outside my wheelhouse

still emotionally devastated but hey, I built this totally bespoke capture app today it drives my Syrp Genie Mini (a discontinued and unsupported product) and my Sony A7C to automate 360-degree captures for my beer can collection and processes them into a single unwrapped texture so that's cool

getting started on a new bot built on top of discordkit for my next little project first thing I did was scaffold out a hot-reloadable foundation using @cloudflare.social workers + durable objects, so that as I build, I won't have to worry about burning through the daily 1k websocket connection cap

But perhaps my favorite feature is the Parts of Speech highlighting for markdown and plain text documents as well as within the extension panel itself. This feature is specifically designed to help beginners to see word boundaries in Japanese text, which traditionally doesn't use spacing.

Jisho features a bunch of convenient tools for working with Japanese text: - Copy any word as it's reading/as romaji/markdown formatted furigana/HTML ruby markup - Search by radical or by drawing unfamiliar kanji - Refactor text selections to automatically add/remove furigana or spacing

Hit publish today on my new VSCode extension, Jisho! It is an offline Japanese <-> English dictionary, and it is completely free and open source! You can find it on the marketplace here: marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemNa... And here's the repo: github.com/Saeris/vscod...

got tag-based filtering with autocompletion added today and I've also implemented a browse mode with detailed categories and a gojūon sort the autocomplete is smart in that it only suggests valid tag combinations and even shows you the number of results those filters would narrow down to!

okay let's try this again! before I had a base light/dark palette that was tuned to try and cater to users of all types of vision, now I have 4 sets, each tuned to a specific vision profile the goal here is to create separation between parts of speech, so there should be visible word boundaries

Drake @saeris.gg · 31/07/2026
working on accessible color palettes for the jisho extension parts of speech highlighting I'm still trying to nail CVD support. here are the light/dark mode samples I'm leaning towards at present:

anyways, back to grinding on today's deck(s)! maybe I can have it translate my markdown formatted dialog text next. the lack of furigana/<ruby> text formatting in Figma means I need to do all of *that* by hand as well...

Drake @saeris.gg · 06/07/2026
the next step, now that I've got these processing, will be to replicate the stroke-order animations that the source SVGs have but I'll punt on that for now, given that Figma Slides doesn't yet have support for Figma Motion animations it would be pretty slick to have these in a slide deck
100
Drake @saeris.gg · 06/07/2026
so I described in detail to Figma's agent my process for cleaning these up. it didn't get it on the first couple of tries, but by the fourth or fifth iteration telling it to compare its output to the existing hand-crafted versions, it finally cracked the code! here is it's best result so far:
110
Drake @saeris.gg · 06/07/2026
as you can see, that's a heck of a lot of components I went and touched up by hand (224 kanji, before stroke variants) so naturally, I'd rather not pour more of my time into the remaining 18 lessons worth. that's a lot of paths to restyle!

Drake @saeris.gg · 06/07/2026
yesterday I gave @figma.com's new generative plugins a spin to automate some tedious work away for me in my monthly Kanji lessons, I put together slide decks with stroke order diagrams. while I have the SVGs sourced already, they needed cleaning up in Figma, which at best was an hour of hard work

Drake @saeris.gg · 06/07/2026
pretty sick though for just an hour or so of prompting!

narrowed down an issue I had previously experienced with @npmx.dev and just now again with @antfu.me's Nostics docs site it appears that because I had downloaded Geist (a @vercel.com font) when it first came out, anytime I visited a site that used it, the wrong font weight would be loaded!
Nostics docs with Geist enabled (loading the version installed on my system rather than distributed with the site itself)

Note the extra bold weight, which makes it blurry and nearly illegibleNostics docs site with Geist disabled, falling back to the system's sans-serif font

Drake @saeris.gg · 08/06/2026
fallback fonts would help in cases such as my previous rant, where you can see on the left the unicode character doesn't have a glyph available so Figma bails out to another font (Inter, probably), but you can't override that behavior yourself on the right I substituted the character for an svg
000
Drake @saeris.gg · 08/06/2026
on a related note, I really wish Figma supported configuring fallback fonts and had native ruby text rendering support in my slide decks I have to manually handle furigana, so an example passage like this one takes me a good chunk of time to do the typesetting by hand

we recently wrapped up Journal with Witch (違国日記); by far it is one of the best anime I've seen in a long time! unusual for a piece of Japanese media, the depth and humanity of the story and dialog were refreshing, with some of the most relatable neurodivergent characters in the medium

compare this to the text to speech app I made last weekend, which got the multi-voice dialog speaking and a dialog editor all working right off the bat! It even adapted the crude design I gave it half-way through pretty well too user-sting-92053801.figma.site

here's the design I gave it (first image) versus version 9 (second image) this came about while trying to fix the select inputs, which were completely broken to start. not a single version is usable, either, as it fails to use mediabunny from npm (claude couldn't do it either)
