Writing something up, and reading this + re-reading Mensh & @kordinglab.bsky.social's: journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol... The new paper has steps to follow, helps my ADD brain. The older paper helps me keep my eyes on the prize. I feel like many researchers need these, like, now more than ever

Have you ever thought about writing topics about hive mind? I started studying neuroscience partially due to my delusion about a unified collective intelligence :0

Currently, many people have already done all sorts of things with this fly's consciousness, but one person felt so bad for it that they created a "fly paradise space" so it can freely fly around as it pleases 🥺 (5/5)

Minh-Huy Mai-Duc @sabertoaster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Many others have simulated the fly flying in Minecraft, made it play DOOM, made it play Beat Saber... 😱 if you replaced the fly's consciousness with a human's, these things are exactly the plot of "Black Mirror". (4/n)

In short, they have just created the consciousness of a living creature to upload to a computer, and they can do whatever they want with that consciousness. (3/n)

And when this "brain" data is put into a virtual space, it operates just like a normal living fly. This virtual fly flies around, the way it moves its limbs, gets stimulated when impacted by something... the only catch is it doesn't know it is merely virtual and existing in a virtual space 🙃 (2/n)

www.facebook.com/share/1ERqcH... Simply put, scientists have successfully simulated the "brain" of a male fruit fly. Every neural connection in the brain and central nervous system of a fly, consisting of over 166,000 nerve cells (neurons), has been copied 🪰 (1/n)

Some of my local news pulled this up and claimed the "virtualization" of MaleCNS has conciousness, which in turn offend me at the very least as it mispresented the interesting science behind.

I'm still feeling like I've not committed fully to NeuroAI from a computational neuroimaging (CN) perspective. My thought is, I've never saw any direct implications in CN to NAI (therefore I'm lacking motivation), so if someone has any views / regards for this Id be very appreciated ^^

One thing I could remember (vaguely) from my biology class and youtube videos on evolution is that, it doesn't care if an organism wants to be better--subjectively (?), it just strives for what's good enough. Therefore if there's a shortcut (although brittle and temporary), we tend to lean toward it

I often argue with my peers about how using AI ruins our learning experience by being result-centric instead of progress-centric. One (rough) example could be giving children calculator instead of teaching them calculus and matrix operations. Likewise many argue why do we need to learn math anymore.

The principle of emergence, from CompCogNeuro book, chapter 1
Figure 1.1: The principle of emergence, simply illustrated. The gears on the left do not interact, and nothing interesting
happens. However, on the right, the interaction between the gears produces interesting, useful phenomena that cannot
be reduced to the individual gears separately. For example, the little gear will spin faster, but the larger one will
have higher torque at its axel — these properties would be entirely different if either gear interacted with a different
sized gear. Furthermore, the material that the gear is made from really doesn’t matter very much — the same basic
behavior would be produced by plastic, metal, wood, etc. Thus, even in this simple case, there is something just
slightly magical and irreducible going on — when two gears get together, something emerges that is more than the
sum of the parts, and exists in a way independent of the parts, even while being entirely dependent on actually having
those parts to make it happen. This is a good analogy for the relationship between the mind and the brain, and
computer models can capture many complex interactions between neurons in the brain, and reveal nonobvious kinds
of emergence.
