God damn, Aaron Pierre looks like he was *built in a lab* to play a comic book superhero. Jesus Christ.

It is, in fact, just as much fun to research unfamiliar marginalized perspectives and try to do right by them as it is to research anything else for a fic! It's as much fun to get a sensitivity reader's comments of "oh you nailed this!" as it is to get a beta reader's enthusiastic support!

I'm very proud of all the research I did (at one point I had a chart of how the moon cycle lined up w/Catholic & Muslim holidays AND the tides!) and the fact that I not only got an enthusiastic beta reader who was a poc but I also paid a Muslim sensitivity reader to make sure I got that bit right!

I remember writing this story in a feverish frenzy, desperately trying to pour my love for the show and the characters out on the page.

I think my most "Halloweeny" story is my Midnight Mass AU, where Sheriff Hassan is a werewolf and that changes the whole genre from "tragic horror" to "supernatural romance." archiveofourown.org/works/506361...

I feel very fannishly fallow atm. Didn't know if it's good or bad. The falling-out I had a little bit ago kind of halted my last fixation in its tracks, and I haven't gotten momentum for anything since. But I'm busy doing other stuff so I don't feel an ache yet. We'll see what time brings.

One of the reasons why I don't enjoy self proclaimed villain/bad guy fans is because they're not... actually? They're woobifyers masquerading as lovers of the loathsome. You can tell bcuz they enter a frothy rage at even the mildest reminder that the guy is bad, does bad things... and is still hot

Like. The potential is there! But do I care enough to write a second alienfucker(-adjacent) fic in one year? When the second fandom doesn't REALLY have its hooks in me? I don't know!

You ever watch something and you go " Hm this has potential for a really unhinged fic" but it doesn't exist yet - and you're not attached enough to the source canon to decide whether you want to be the one to write it?

I will say, this INABILITY to read for context goes hand in hand with a REFUSAL to read for context. I have been dealing with it, and have been watching other (predominantly black or queer) pop culture or fandom commentators deal with it for over a decade, where audiences decide they know better

Point being, and I am a negroni in here, that if an *artistic representation* of a humanised AI has made you feel fuzzy towards actual AI, you have missed the point by some hundred miles. Be fuzzy towards the brilliant writers.

Buttercup and Inigo are wine besties but do not sleep together, and would laugh uproariously at the mere implication. Fezzik has his hands full enough with one tempestuous swordsman, and Westley is still a little intimidated (and occasionally bewildered) by him anyway. So it all works out.

Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Buttercup and Westley, and Inigo and Fezzik: obvious. Westley and Inigo have months of charged swordplay before. Well. Buttercup and Fezzik like curling up in bed together whispering secrets and being soft while trusting that the other two will guard them.

It's very clear that companies are generating racist and sexist controversy as a brand strategy, e.g., Sydney Sweeney, Converse.

And honestly, I appreciate competent writing the more *I* write and watch more shows and etc, especially if the writing doesn't follow the same template from episode to episode (like most procedurals). "Consistent competence" is surprisingly difficult!

(Leverage is one of those shows, too. It just flaunts its humor/quirks up front, and lives in a different genre space.)

Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
It sounds like I'm damning the show with faint praise, but not every show needs to be wildly experimental or groundbreaking! Sometimes you want a show that knows exactly what it is and owns that space consistently.

Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Every time I rewatch the netflix Lost in Space series, I'm reminded how extremely competent the writing is. It's not groundbreaking, but it's entertaining, the characters are consistent while showing steady growth, & the narrative weaves multiple chains of cause and effect together very believably!

(and that has primed too many of us - myself included! - to do shit like pathologizing normal human variation/foibles, desperately seeking not just consensus but absolute approval of and encouragement for all our choices, and rejecting what earlier generations called "having basic social graces.")

There is a VAST GULF between "living in an ideological bubble" and "never experiencing interpersonal friction" that is absolutely erased by the way the Internet is built now, and I hate it.

Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
We cannot truly build coalitions nor communities, nor learn and grow as individuals, within digital architectures where the only friction we experience is by being exposed to other people who piss us off all the time for engagement metrics.

Neither form of capital has any correlation to actual morality/ethics, natch. They're both based on perception. But I think the two get conflated in discussions and I think a finer distinction might be helpful when discussing celebrity.

Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
(yes Leto and Depp are also unprofessional abusive taintwaffles to their coworkers on set, but they do seem to have enough social connections where it counts to keep getting gigs, ugh)
120
Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Then there are the reverse - stars that constantly sell tickets/etc (cultural capital) who are apparently miserable shits to work with (too many to list, frankly).
130
Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I feel like there are celebrities that seem to inexplicably retain some kind of social capital in the Deciding Class while they have zero cultural capital. Jared Leto, Johnny Depp, etc have name recognition but when has their name on a brand last successfully vaulted that brand to huge profits?
130
Saathi @saathi1013.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Thinking about celebrity and the difference between social capital and cultural capital. "Social capital" is when the networks of people around you like you and want to be around/work with you. "Cultural capital" is when you have weight/fame in The Public Eye.

She was really willing to coast on The Aesthetique™ until we got to the "farm" scenes, at which point she said "fucking FOR REAL?" and I told her, "yes, that was a real thing," and she started going on a tear about tradwife influencers and raw milk, lol. (I love my wife.)

Wife just watched Antoinette for the first time, and said, within ten minutes of each other: "I'm not going to bed yet, there's only ten minutes left and I have to see how it ends!" </s> and: "Well, that certainly was A Movie!"
