Found the perfect name for my new 3D printer: "Plasta Ace" - you genX folks might get it.

After having spent some time reading about golang ("learning go" & lots of online resources), I think I am starting to like it... I used it in anger for quite a while but I am starting to get it. For all of its compromises you do get quite a lot in return. It fits that "simple" design I like.

House of Dynamite is quite poor. It feels like a botched adaptation of « Nuclear War - A Scenario » with rushed script and meh acting. I have the feeling the rumored Villeneuve adaptation will not happen now.

I am also not as experienced with go, so there's that, but still, it feels like going back in time.

So much is said about go and how much better it is compared to dynamic languages because "types" (as half-assed as the type system is). The little go I do I spend 90% of the time building/deploying and fixing nil pointer derefs. The dev workflow is just horrible/slow compared to say clojure.

Forget what I posted earlier. FreeCAD is awesome. It’s just a bit different from the mainstream/proprietary solutions, with a bit of tweaking its ui/config and getting used to it, it becomes *very usable*.

Been playing with FreeCAD lately, I really want to like it, but it's fighting me. I am torn between investing time into a tool that will likely pay off down the road or just get stuff done on one of the pay-to-play alternatives. 1.x is a huge leap in usability though, it's worth giving it a go.

I wonder how many web exposed vibe-coded nodejs apps out there are impacted, without the author having a clue of the fact the impacted dependency is there, or/and potentially how to "fix it".

I expect to be getting a lot of emails like this soon. This one is from @s.ly and @keyboard.io about the tariffs. Such a pointless destruction of US small businesses.

To our US customers:

Yesterday, the Trump Administration announced that they will be ending the de minimis exemption for all shipments from Hong Kong and China on May 2. They also raised the minimum import tax on products made in China or Hong Kong to 54% of the sale price.
While we design our keyboards in the US, like most consumer electronics companies we manufacture our products in southern China. These new rules will drastically increase how much it costs you to buy our products.

(1) If you've been considering buying anything we make, now is the time.

According to the new policy, you will owe a 54% import tax on any package from Keyboardio that arrives after May 1. Once the de minimis rule is gone, no sale we can offer will ever make the Model 100 or Atreus as inexpensive as it is today.

Starting in May, US customers will be charged $188 in new taxes (tariffs) on a Model 100 + additional customs clearance fees. The new US taxes on the Atreus will be $80 + additional customs clearance fees.

We're really proud of these keyboards—we designed them to be the most comfortable tools to help you be productive, and to help you enjoy the experience of typing. We think they're worth the investment. We don't think a 54% tax is reasonable.

I don't get the point of the yubikey nano 5C design factor. If you're supposed to leave it plugged all the time (can't have it on a keychain or something) why even bother using one.

Polanyi calls this "tacit knowledge", a thing which we only understand as part of something else. When we speak, we do not focus on making sounds, we focus on our words. We understand the muscular act of speech, but would struggle to explain it.

That emacs 30 changelog is appetizing. Also if you are an eglot user and miss the sideline display of emacs-lsp, have a look at github.com/emacs-sideli.... I used to use flymake-show-diagnostics-at-end-of-line 'short, but that's too noisy compared to sideline.

I started to watch "Dune: Prophecy". So much wasted potential... The cast, while having a few great actors includes also some really bad choices. Some of the most important characters are just laughable as soon as they open their mouth.

also, favor "one way to do it", it's hell to go from service to service to see people use whatever variant of the api shared by everybody on theirs, and later potentially introduce their own. There's a whole chapter to be written about macros here as well, but that's obvious.

Max Penet @s-exp.com · 07/07/2023
That's just one detail. Some other things that come to mind is about making user exposed apis relatively flat from the outside, nobody wants to have to dig throught a 20 layer "mille-feuille" until you reach the core of the problem. It's fine in static languages, it sucks in clojure

I have to cook a blog post about clojure "hygiene" in multi-teams clojure orgs. There are so many little things that you just never care about when you're a lone shooter that becomes paramount to not waste people's time in bigger orgs.
