On my very first meeting as a city councilor in Dec 2023, we approved intersection traffic cameras for speeding. I don’t like fines. I’m skeptical of “smart” transportation tech. I worry about surveillance. But dangerous driving is one of the top killers in the US, and inhospitable streets are…

A 2026 city council policy/programs update for Boulder, CO: One of the main ways Boulder city council legislates is by meeting once every 2 years to create a short list of workplan priorities. For 2026 it’s only a 1-year process as we transition to even year elections (good for turnout, yay!).

...don't accommodate modern #bicycle shapes/sizes (like cheap "wave" and “coathanger" designs) and swap them out with more accessible Inverted U racks that are bolted and properly spaced. That's basic hygiene for new buildings. Now our opportunity is to figure out how to deploy them more widely.

Nextdoor is right: #Boulder should make bicycle security a priority. One crucial step is to make it possible for riders to follow the city's own (and other experts' advice)—to lock your frame to a sturdy anchor. To do that, we need an effort to retire the many racks around town that...

City of #Boulder has concluded its mega #parking reform. Parking minimums are now gone. So all those patches of 200 square feet that home-builders have been required to install at a cost of $30,000+ per space can now be used for other things like vegetable gardens, bike parking, and housing.

One of greatest gifts of being an elected official: The chance to sit with ppl who didn’t vote for me & ask me to consider a reasoned alternative to my thinking—then talk. It always makes me stronger. There’s no room in the US for political violence. The way to a better future is better ideas.

Over the decades, Boulder’s population has grown slowly relative to the county—and at a slower rate vs the county compared to other university towns vs their counties. CU’s share of the city pop *is* up from 2010, but it’s not a deluge—the figure has grown from 29% to 32%.

Been years since I’ve had much stock in the idea that some amount of disasters will mass-inspire people for climate solutions. Still, they lay bare that whatever your predispositions, you have a big stake in the resources and capacity of your local gov to be managing for the future.
