A question for non-fiction authors regarding permissions... When quoting text directly, permission must be obtained from the source. But, when paraphrasing or citing reference material, do you still request permission? Any feedback would be much appreciated 🙏 #Writing #WritingLife #AuthorQuery

6/ I believe the solution we need is citizen-led participatory democracy. The public doesn’t want to witness civilisational collapse, and therefore will work to avoid it, unlike politicians who are wedded to the donors, lobbyists, and the revolving door of job opportunities in these industries.

5/ Despite the fact that we’ve had an AI “warning shot”, and that we’ve breached the 1.5C Paris climate goal, I believe we have a closing window of opportunity left to do something. But it will need to be a massive change in a very short space of time.

Ryan Mizzen @ryanmizzen.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
4/ Given that politicians are failing us on major issues such as climate breakdown and the AI crisis, I believe we seriously need to question whether our current form of governance is working for us, and whether there might be a more effective option in the form of permanent participatory democracy.

2/ This is happening in 2026 whilst these systems are fairly new. Imagine what next year’s systems will be capable of. And those that follow the year after. It’s no wonder that some people believe we are nearing the point of superintelligence, which experts warn could result in human extinction.

4/ Thus, humanity is responsible for this summer of climate chaos. To make matters worse, the climate scientist, Kevin Anderson, says that, “this is the least extreme weather that [we] will ever live through. It’s going to get worse and worse every single year until we stop burning fossil fuels.”

3/ Meanwhile, a glacial collapse attributed to our warming climate, caused a horrific mudslide in Nepal and Tibet. Some people have attributed this summer’s extreme weather to El Nino. However, a team led by Dr James Hansen, believes that the extreme weather is a direct result of climate change.
