👀 Don't ask me why but I've gone down a crazy rabbit hole to find out why pure vanilla extract is so expensive, and came across this wild passage. Turns out growers have *ONE DAY* to *HAND POLLINATE* vanilla orchid flowers in order for them to produce the bean pods!

Our era today is... beset with macroeconomic instability... crumbling political settlements across the Global North, growing inequality, ...unbridled speculation in AI, trade wars, actual wars and—sadly all too often forgotten in economic discussions—ecological and climate breakdown.

And we have a new all-time record warm *absolute* temperature for the oceans, according to ERA5 (which goes back to 1940): August 21st likely marked the warmest Sea Surface Temperatures have been for the entire Holocene period. Should be major news!

As the climate breaks down, costs go up: Welcome to ‘climateflation’
Fossil-fuel dependence, the costs of adapting to a changing climate and the transition to cleaner energy are all driving up costs.

OK this one I find TRULY REMARKABLE. If you look at Year-to-date Fire Radiative Power in Canada (the heat energy given off by wildfires from beginning of year to present), the TOP 4 worst fire years in this data set are: 1) 2023 2) 2025 3) 2024 4) 2026 😯

Interesting question came up at the other place about how the surface “cooling” effects of wildfire smoke compare to the radiative “warming” power of fires themselves. Any thoughts on this or suggestions of literature that discusses?
