“Cutting this much from the university budget will mean that some of the core functions of the university will be lost. It’s not possible to just do more with less — to work smarter, to trim around the edges. We’re going to have to do less with less.” Gift link: www.startribune.com/umn-cuts-sta...

The case won't be argued until December, and a ruling might not be issued until June 2027. Flights can resume until judgment. Damn.

It's remarkable (in a very good way) to see an elected member of the Democratic Party saying this. For decades, the Party has treated public higher education as a jobs training program, not a site for cultivating democratic habits of mind. I deeply hope that things are changing.

‘Showgirls’: The Gratuitous, Surreal Bomb That Was Maybe Brilliant
The reception to Paul Verhoeven’s lurid 1995 melodrama starring Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan and Gina Gershon was humiliating, but it’s since become a thought-provoking camp favorite.

I was explaining this at a political meeting last night. Stephen Miller has smartly decided to fly below the radar after the backlash to Minneapolis, Chicago, and other outrages. But by many measures things have gotten worse.

Academic freedom cannot survive in a world in which “financial exigency” are magic words. This is the fight of the next decade.

This is genuinely important. We are being asked again and again to conceive of valuable activities, the things that make life life, as chores. Death by ‘convenience.’

Right before Netanyahu was set to address the UN in NYC, Zohran Mamdani preempts him with this moving video — He hosted Palestinians who were forced to leave or lost family in Gaza, and planted an olive tree with them at Gracie Mansion:

He’s now made clear that he will not be responding to our letter. Such disappointing leadership and failure to take accountability.

One of the definitive days of this admin imo was the WSJ identifying racist posts from a DOGE staffer - the kind of stuff that would be read out loud to you as HR explains why you're not getting severance - and Vance saying no, we won't let the media cancel people anymore.
