What @doctorow.pluralistic.net describes here is both a realistic description of the current state and a future that is worth fighting for. It still is in our hands to shape our future in a way that allows us to live good lives. This is the positive vision we need.

No one knows. No one *can* know, because this is all up for grabs. The future isn't something that happens to us. The future is something that *we* make.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

The thing is, most people have no idea about all of this and are dangerously naive. And it is not even their fault, because how can you know all of this if you are not a hardcore tech nerd?

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

Let's assume the value of the company has not changed, each share is no worth 1000/90 = 11,1$ (stock price goes up!). Also, any potential dividend is now distributed to 90 shares and not 100. Another benefit. So it is a mechanism to increase the value of shares.

Robert - DevOpsBob @ruzitschka.at · 29/09/2026
Well, it reduced the number of stocks. So they usually go up in value. It is a way to use company earnings to benefit stock holders. Let's assume the company has a valuation of 1000$ and has distributed 100 shares, value 10$ per share. Now it buys back 10 shares: 90 left.

Totally agree. And equally disturbing that this is the prevailing culture in an industry that at this very moment seems to be totally sacrosanct and pushes their horrible products down our throats. These folks build this stuff. Their moral depravity is part of the product.

An ancient and magical amber bear 🐻 ✨ Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea. National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small and ancient figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Danish Mesolithic period. The museum lighting makes the amber glow translucent orange against a dark display case background. The bear is displayed on a small metal stand viewed in profile facing right. The ears, muzzle, and mouth are defined. The neck has a polished groove suggesting it was once suspended on a cord. The characteristic shoulder hump of a brown bear is clearly defined. There are some finely incised horizontal lines along the belly. The legs are incomplete. Length 6.5cm. Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic' for ancient peoples. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.
The bear was found in 1991 on a west coast beach of the Danish North Sea island of Fanø. It is one of a small number of amber animal figurines from the Baltic Sea region which have been assigned to the Mesolithic period by means of a typo-chronological approach and /or other contextual information.
